This article is from the September 99 Socan (Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers in Canada). They did a feature on teen song writers, and did articles on Sum 41, Serial Joe, Maren Ord, Sarah & Tegan Quinn, F JAm, Jordan Cook Band, Adam Gregory and Alexandra Sleighton. Here's what they worte about sum 41...
Deryck Whibley, lead singer and guitarist with the Ajax, Ont., punk-pop bans Sum 41 -- which also includes guitarist Dave Baksch, bassist Rich, and drummer Steve Jocz -- learned to write songs almost from the moment he picked up a guitar. Whibley's first batch of originals, written when he was just 14, where what he calls "teenage agnst stuff."
Now signed to EMI Music Publishing Canada, with a completed album produced by Sum 41's manager, Treble Charger's Greig Nori, Whibley says his writting has come a long way. "Before, it would be a whole differnet topic every different line. Now I stick to a theme and things make more sense than they used too."
EMI Music Publishing Canada president Michael McCarty says that wether they're young or more mature, the quality he looks for in writers is "world class natural talent."
"Ovbiously, some one who's quite young dosen't have a lot of life experience" he acknowledges, "so what we're looking for is an incredible amount of raw talent."
