Troop History

Scouting began at St. James in 1948. The first Boy Scout meeting was held in February 1948 and was organized by Joe Dobbs, Fred Shackleton, James Evans and Perry Evans. In addition to camping trips and helping around the church, the Scouts started a tradition of selling pop and popcorn at the St. James Festival. This has evolved into the busy pizza stand at recent festivals. The Scouts also sold pop at bingo.
Many exciting things happened in the Scout program in the 1970's. In addition to trips to New Mexico, Yellowstone National Park, and Summer Camps, Troop 314 continued to work hard on earning religious medals and working on Eagle Scout projects. On January 18, 1972, Robert Michael Hetterscheidt received the troop's first Eagle Scout designation. Since then, the troop has proudly added 12 more Eagle Scouts.
