Welcome to my page for Knome ! I will try to descride his construction, and my experiance at Battle Bots 99. First off I will have to tell you this right now, there are not verry pictures on this page. I was not planning on building this robot until two weeks before Battle bots I got a VERRY Generous offer from Gary Cline (another robot builder!) to help me get to Battle Bots! I was so shocked, but I was even more so when 4 others also offered to help me out! There names are Dan Danknick, Charles Carnes, Will wright, Andrew Nortan, and the man who got the ball rolling, Gary Cline! lets just say the combined amounts of money these people gave me totaled over $1000.00! Well on to robot info, I was impressed on the whepon where you put a axe on a long "arm" out a side of your robot, and when you 360 around the axe spins with your robot and can hit with a LOT of force, I decided to build one. I took the 3/4" steel frame from my past robot Gremlin, and I cut it, and welded it into a new shape, it was the same top, and bottom, so I could be flipped with no problems, I then took two motors I bought from a surplus store that spun at 6000 rpm's, I then took two kiddie car gear boxes to some 7" lawn mower tires for the drive, I bolted them down to the base, (which was some plywood, bolted to my frame) and I had a drive train, little did I know you had to weight these kind of robots properly. Something I didn't do, so Knome couldn't spin as fast as he should have. I then got a double bladed ax, removed the flimsy wooden handle and put 3/4" steel pipe running from the axe head to my robot. I also put a pic axe driven my a Makita 9.6v coordless drill motor. It was aurmored with wood and alluminum sheets. Motor control was through two Team Delta ralay bourds, driving some automotive starter seliniods. it worked ok but with just on and of control, I fried my drive motors a little to much, a little to often. This robot was controled with my 8 chanel FM Futaba radio. Ok Sorry for all the Babbling and no pics, so here is one when I got to the event, posing with knome for a photo album Battle Bots was doing.
Here is a shot of me at my table with me working on puting in the master power switches.
ok here is my rundown of Battle Bots 99'!
My matches where short and sad, in my first bout I was up against a robot called Stinger that had some big tank style treads and some ramming pokers in front, when the anowncer said GO I shot my robot right at his and got a good ram in! whahoo my only good ram the whole event, but it ended when I was inpaled by his ramming pokers, I backed off and started spinning but then the unthinkable happend, I started SMOKEING!!! AND I SMOKED ALLOTTTTT!!! it was fun watching it though and when I was carring my robot outa the arena I got allot of cheres so it was not so bad, I got in the pits and opened my robot up and found two dead motors, I was in a pannic because my spares hadn't arived and I was in allot of trouble!!! I quikley came up with a crazy idea and took the coordless drill that drove the picax and and got the spare pick ax drill and rigged up some axles in my spare tires (Thanks to team slam for the bolts) and I chucked them into the drilles and plummers taped the drills into my robot problem solved! sort of in my hurry I forgot to tie down one of the batteries and one good hit from W.L.O.W. and my batterie moved enough to unhook my batteries, I was out of the face offs, so I set out to redo my electronics so I had some room in there for the extra batterie for the melee, I took out the car starter selinoids and just used the team delta boards to drive the drills, I got it ready to go and watched all the rest of the matches that day and once it was time for the melee I grabed my bot and carried it into the arena, set it down, turned it on and left, then walked out, right before they closed the doors I noticed I forgot to take off all the sharp edge covers! Whoops! So I ran into the arena right before they shut the doors and pulled them off and ran out, I then got back into my drivers position and got ready, the match started and I started moving, I got nailed by toe crusher right off, he then pushed me right into mouser's open flap on top, I was stuck ther for a minute but toe crusher slamed me again! I flew off of mouser's top and a Verry horrable thing happend, the top of my robot FLEW OFF! all of my electronics where verry exposed! I was verry thankfull when toe crusher decided not to ruen my electronics! he had perfect shots at my batteries and team delta boards! that was true sportsmanship! any way I stoped moving at that point and was verry amazed that no one killed my robots guts! I was out in the middle of the arena and no one even pushed me into the saws! Well after it was all over I discoverd that the shafts where spinning inside the wheels so I couldn't move!
ok here is pictures of the Kilobot Rumble.
