Narwhals

Monodon monoceros

Average Size

Newborns: 5 feet

Adults: (males) 13-16 feet (excluding tusk)

(females) 11-13 feet

Weight: up to 3,500 lbs.

Location:

Found in arctic, especially in the western hemisphere.

In case you didn't know:

Narwhals eat Atlantic cod, herring, smelt, flunder, halibut, squid, and crustaceans.

Only the male Narwhals have a tusk, but on occasion a female may have one too. This tusk is actually a tooth.

These whales have no dorsal fin.

Older Narwhals are almost completely white.

A large tuck can weigh up to 22 pounds.

These animals are probably preyed on by killer whales, someimes but rarely by polar bears, and walruses. Greenland sharks will eat dead, weak, or injured Narwhals.
