Hardez is a strong, skilled warrior. But he is in early middle-age, while you are more nimble and have greater stamina. If you can keep him on the move long enough, he will tire before he can kill you. Nevertheless, you are wounded many times, though not seriously; likewise, Hardez does not remain unscathed, for you are a very strong, young man with great tenacity. Finally, your sword cleaves his body in twain to the breastbone and he topples from the saddle. Heartened by this sign of your prowess, and the rightness of your cause, your men form a wedge at the front of the royal army and pierce the rebels' host clean through. During the long, hot and dusty day, there are further deeds of prowess on either side, but the advantage lies more and more with you and your king. By nightfall it is obvious that the rebels are beaten.
King Henry bids farewell to his victorious young duke. You go around and mop up the last feeble pockets of discontent; dispossessing those who fought against you of their own free will (as distinguished from those who followed their immediate lords against you because they were commanded to). Replacing empty fiefs with men you can trust, your power base has increased enormously. Now it only remains, for you to assure peace and complete control in the future. You decide to call an ecclesiastical council, to proclaim the "truce of God" throughout your domain. This will mean that only the duke of Normandy can wage war; all other warfares will be deemed illegal, and punishable by yourself.
When king Henry hears of your intentions, he is upset and sends word to you that only independent potentates have the right to summon ecclesiastical councils; you are a vassal of his, and therefore have no such right. He warns you to stand down and know your place.
You submit to the king's demands, rather than risk a break with your liege lord.
You submit to the king's demands. To increase your prestige in other ways, you go on pilgrimage to Jerusalem.
You ignore king Henry's demands. Instead, you hold the ecclesiastical council as announced.
