William, the duke of Normandy: 1048 to 1060

You and your men are disarmed and taken captives. Normandy is put under a regency: it is galling, but the regent chosen by king Henry is your uncle William of Talou. After spending a period of time at the French court as a political lever to keep Talou in check, king Henry allows you to take lordship of a minor holding on the border with your cousin Guy of Burgundy, where you spend the rest of your life needling each other. Such is the destiny of those who do not ride the crest of their opportunities.

Contemplate the heavenly city, you will have nothing more....
