William the Bastard: 1038 to 1047

Your effort to identify your most dangerous enemies is partially successful: you lose even more members of your small household in spying out the malefactors. One of your servants who is captured talks under torture, but you never discover this fact. In the middle of a dark and stormy night, your hideout is surrounded. By morning's light you see a terrifying sight: ranks of soldiers surrounding the abbey where you are staying. The abbot is brave and loyal, but his few guards cannot keep the enemy out: the abbey gates are breached, and after a stiff, short melee the abbey is taken. The soldiers search the abbey and find you. Your fate is swift and innocuous: either suffocation, or drowning, or strangulation. Your body is never found.
