JCO has news again

It's really a site you should check out daily that one, and I can't help to HAVE to report it all here, it's all SO interesting that I want as many people possible to read it, so that's why I post it here tooooo...they report:

Diary of an Extra

There are some things that really make you want to see a movie, and the article below can undoubtedly be included in this category. It was sent by our Anonymous reporter and written by his friend who is currently working as an extra in "The Majestic". The author is a veteran in the art of movie-making so this comes from someone who definitely knows what he's talking about:

Everybody comes to Mabel's
Everybody comes to Mabel's.

«The schedule is tough, just waiting endlessly, starting at 5AM wakeup to 8PM Wrapup, actually 10PM on Wednesday night. Finally got in front of the lens for a total of 9 retakes, mainly due to one of the principals had a fit of the coughs (it was almost comical) but it was during Carrey's long drawn-out reaction to a touching scene in which it took 45 seconds to respond each time.

Then added to that was the makeup people flitting about with powder puff and other necessities, then having to hold in position all the while, was giving me feet and back problems, aggravated by the shoes which were cumbersome and tiring to the extreme.

However, a very sensitive and touching thing happened between Carrey and a lady Extra. Carrey suddenly reached out to the extra behind him in an improvisation for the emotion he wanted for his dealing with the girl he "can't remember" Carrey reached for and got a touching motherly reaction from the extra that gave him his motivation to the "girl" All quite teary, even amongst others aware of the exchange. [All those years in films in Hollywood and] I have never seen that kind of thing happening.

It was a tender experience for the extra, she was overwhelmed at the intimacy---It was a real encounter between a sensitive actor motivating both himself into his following scene and getting a spontaneous reaction from an extra who had never before been on stage. I would think the Director would highlight the lady in a subsequent scene somehow.

The whole of it was quite moving, a very large departure from his noted zany antics.

The young Director of the Extras is very much liked by all, he's sharp in his herding 84 people about, with Monday's hoorah of about 200 new extras expected it should be a big adventure for all.»

-- With our sincerest thanks to "The Majestic" Extra and to our correspondent for sending this wonderful article, and also to Gary Franklin @ KHUM.com for the cool photo.

"Majestic" set reports - March 27

Yesterday's work (Tuesday, 27) on "The Majestic" production was composed of three scenes, as MB let us know.

The first scene of the day was Luke (Jim Carrey) accompanied by Adele (Laurie Holden) and Harry (Martin Landau) walking up the street. This short scene was filmed out of sequence as it chronologically happens in the story after the other two.

Another short scene filmed that day was the dramatically important moment when Harry takes Luke to see the Majestic for the first time. Below you can see a detail of the theater sign with some of its letters missing. The picture was taken by Ferndale Fritz on March 23. More details here.

A new scene at Mabel's was also filmed. In the scene Lawson's inhabitants gather around Luke and Harry inside the Diner after the news of his "comeback" had spread across town.

MB has done it again... the very first picture of Jim Carrey on the set of "The Majestic"!

The picture was taken Monday 26 and as she told JCO, most all of that day was devoted to filming several takes of the same short scene. The scene consisted of Luke (Jim Carrey) and Harry (Martin Landau) walking up Main Street and being met by the mayor of Lawson (Jeffrey DeMunn).

A little of Carrey at the Oscars:

Oscar-winning makeup artist Rick Baker said he owed a debt to Jim Carrey.

Baker, who won an Academy Award for designing Carrey's makeup in ``Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas,'' said the actor suffered nearly three months of discomfort under layers of heavy, constricting latex and green paint.

``He hated it,'' Baker said backstage at the Shrine Auditorium. ``He has been quite vocal about it. You've probably heard him complain about how he felt like he was buried alive.''

The actor wore the outfit for 92 days, Baker added.

thanks grinchy steven!

JCO reports....

"The Majestic" in Ferndale - First week in review

The first week of "The Majestic" production at Ferndale has passed by and our Anonymous location correspondent makes a round up of all the happenings in town, including also a set report from one of his friends, who was selected as extra. Illustrating his article are several wonderful pictures sent by Ferndale Fritz, and by Gary Franklin.

«After that very long first day of shooting, the film company moved up into the Ferndale cemetary: this place looks like a movie set even without any help from Castle Rock---its on a fairly steep green slope with dense evergreen forest at the upper end, and a beautiful view of the town below. There is a black wrought iron gate and fancy archway at the entrance back of the former Methodist church. There are hundreds of very old gravestones and monuments inscribed with the names of local settlers as far back as the mid-19th century. It appeared in Salem's Lot, and it's a local jewel, full of stories about the people who lived in this town. In the middle, Castle Rock found a spot to put all of the prop graves of veterans who did not return from the war, in the story.

In town, all of the pictures of servicemen in the windows of the shops are actual Ferndale residents from WWII, copied, framed and placed there by the set dressers.

On Thursday, the movie crew moved down to Mabel's Diner, where they spent all day shooting inside: this is a beautiful re-creation of an old diner---stainless steel outside in a racy 'moderne' design of the 40's: inside, the illusion is perfect: working grill, ceramic tile and 40's props and furniture make the diner a great visual. A lot of the local people here want the diner to stay...some even want the Majestic building to stay, too, but that's another story. The diner sits in front of Lino's service station which is still wearing its paint and makeup job from 'Outbreak' filmed here in 1994.

On Friday, the crew was back on Main Street in front of the hardware store, filming a scene with Martin Landau (as Jim Carrey's father) and David Ogden Stiers playing the town doctor whose office is next door. At the end of the day, they cleared the streets for a drive-by shot inside the old fashioned police car being driven up the street with Jim Carrey in back: by now he's changed his clothes--- light colored pants and a clean cream colored shirt, with a clean white square of gauze over the wound on his forehead.

From what I gather, this is going to be a very different kind of Jim Carrey movie: gone are all the rubbery faces and the wild comedy. I think viewers will be very surprised and pleased with the change. It may mean a whole new Jim.

This was quite a week for little Ferndale: Main Street was closed down most of the day on Tuesday and Friday as they filmed.
The usually busy street was eerie in its silence: now and then you could hear the production assistants relaying the messages: 'lock it up'---'rolling'---then 'cut' echoing from one assistant to the other up and down the street. Crowds have been light, and are handled by local conductors who keep them away from the action. So far, I've only heard a second hand report of a girl who burst into tears when she glimpsed Jim Carrey from a distance...

Actor James Whitmore apologized for their taking up so much time away from Main Street businesses when I said hello to him, pushing his own shopping cart at the the local grocery store---I guess it'll all work out. The Main Street merchants all received roses from Castle Rock on Friday, thanking them for their patience.

Mr. Whitmore though has been gracious and friendly to everybody in town: we'd love to have him as a neighbor. He can come plant his vegetable garden and sprinkle Miracle-Gro all over town as far as I'm concerned.

The movie company is taking the weekend off: I'll bet most of them are asleep. This is the first real break they've had since they began building in January. They'll be back Monday, lights, camera, and extras all dressed and ready.

Ever wanted to be an extra in a movie? My friend applied and was chosen. Here's what he said about it:

"Up AT 5:15 A.M. Had a banana & orange. To wardrobe, changed, ate breakfast offered (fair), got a detailed rundown on what to expect how an extra performs etc. (revealing). Planned for waiting call up to camera, and waited and waited till we had lunch (fair).

Expected call to action, but delayed and delayed and delayed until 6:15 P.M, then excused at 6:45. Got our vouchers for the days effort, to be notified Monday if needed further. Went from Dawn to Dusk for $50 with some kind of overtime added.
However, all was not misspent, having enjoyed Mr. Whitmore's gracious manner (as you did).

It didn't seem entirely worth all the waiting about, and the 20 odd number of people hanging around for action, were somewhat disenchanted, by not being even grist for the cutting room floor."»

Editor's Note: Here's crossing fingers that the beautiful Diner set does stay in Ferndale.

"Majestic" set reports - March 22 and 23

My, oh, my, MB sent us two "Majestic" set reports of Thursday and Friday's filming, complete with dialogue! Since this ranks as a Titanic-size spoiler you'll have to click on the links provided below if you want to read the scenes. This is what happened Thursday:

«I didn't get up early enought to catch the first filming of the day, which I believe was Pete and Stan walking toward Mabel's Diner. But the entire afternoon was spent filming a scene in Mabel's Diner. "Stan" (James Whitmore) and "Pete" (Jim Carrey) walk into the diner. "Mabel" (Catherine Dent) and "Harry" (Martin Landau) are already there.»

To read the dialogue click here.

«Shooting has fallen bit behind schedule, due to many takes of the first scene on Tuesday, and today's scene at Mabel's Cafe. To catch up, they'll have to do various street-shots tomorrow (Friday), including a "running shot" from a car on Main Street, and more filming at the cemetary.»

Then on Friday MB told us that most of the work done that day consisted of a few short silent scenes taken several times. However, she managed to score the very first picture of the actors yet, and another excerpt of the dialogue spoken during the scene described below:

«David Ogden Steirs (the Doc) has his back to me, he's talking to Pete/Luke's dad, Harry, I guess after he examined him. That's James Whitmore in the hat and boots, not sure who's to his right. This was during one of the takes.»

    Even more Majestic Thingies

Yes You read it right, thanks to JimCarreyonline'there are more pictures and news, actually thanks to their reporter Ferdale Fritz and another correspondent . Jay :) The correspondent tells the following there:
«Ferndale is rapidly becoming The Little Town That Time Forgot---the upper third of Main Street is quickly being transformed into the town of Lawson, in 1951. Shop windows are being dressed with vintage items: household appliances, dishes, shoes, hardware with all the appropriate signs inside and painted on the window.

    All photos © Ferndale Fritz.
Installing a facade/sidewalk-cover on the "Enterprise" office across the street from Town Hall.
When you look at The Majestic set, even close up its hard to tell the building has not been standing here for the last 100 years: its in the Victorian style, but its built and painted to look as if its been updated over the decades since it was new, with a spetacular sunburst display of blue and yellow and orange neon on the marquee, rising three stories over Main Street. Even the sides of the building are carefully painted to simulate age and wear.
Its been very busy these last several days: filming is scheduled to begin next week, according to this weeks' Ferndale Enterprise which also has an extended interview with director Frank Darabont about Jim Carrey and The Majestic.
Movie magic is hard work: Ferndale has been tolerant of the delays and inconveniences, if not always quiet---but everything is zipping along, faster and faster as filming approaches: the vans are beginning to appear on Main Street.
I noticed these vehicles first when Outbreak was here filming: they are ordinary vans rented by the studio to take cast and crew around town quickly and efficiently---the fun is, you never know who's going to get out of the van. It could be a lighting techician carrying a plug or it could be the Great Man Himself...»
And Ferndale Fritz brings the Shooting scedule in Ferndale:«The weekly Ferndale Enterprise usually amounts to 6 pages every Thursday. Today's, however is a relatively massive 16 pages, almost entirely dedicated to stories, commentary and advertising about Castle Rock's "The Majestic." It begins on the top of page 1. The usual masthead was replaced with one reading in huge letters, "Lawson Beacon." Lawson is the fictional name of the town in which the film is set. Below that, in fine print, is "Future Home of Doc Stanton" followed by "Lawson, California --- A.K.A. the Ferndale Enterprise--- March 15, 2001.
A lengthy interview with director Frank Darabont takes up the better part of two pages. Other articles include the tentative schedule from Location Manager Rory Enke (next Monday, weather permitting, will involve some filming up the coast at the town of Trinidad.
Here is the planned shooting schedule...subject, of course, to weather interruptions:
Tuesday and Wednesday, March 20 & 21: The cameras should be rolling on Ferndale's Main Street and inside "Mabel's Diner."
Thursday, March 22: Main Street will be closed a good part of the day as some exterior filming is done, as well as a "running shot" in a car up and down the length of the street.
Ferndale cemetery will be the location next Friday, March 23, and crews will take that weekend off.
Monday - Wednesday, March 26-28: On Main Street again, and in and around Mabel's Diner and in the pawnshop (neé Ferndale Jewelers).
Thursday and Friday, the 29th & 30th, shooting will finally reach the front of the Majestic Theater itself, with some "day into night" scenes. Then another free weekend for the cast and crew.
April 2-4: Monday and Tuesday will see filming at the delightful "Town Hall," including the surrounding park area and on the northeast side of the building which is the Sheriff's Office entrance.
April 5-6 will be spent doing some interior shooting at Main Street stores, and more time at the cemetary.
The next week, April 9th & 10th: lots of filming at the Majestic, including an all-nighter on Tuesday night.
Wednesday April 11th will see filming "inside" Town Hall. Since the insides of Town Hall are actually a working branch of US Bank, the interior scenes will be shot across the street at the Masonic Hall.
After that, work will move off the streets and into the covered sets at the Ferndale Fairgrounds until about Thursday, April 19, when a day or two more of work around Town Hall and the Veterans' Building should wrap things up.
    #### Ferndale Fritz Comments: After a number of questionably - even outright - derogatory articles and quotes in the Enterprise over the past month or two, it's refreshing to see such an up-beat, positive and pro-movie edition of the local paper. There are dozens of display ads from local and nearby-town merchants thanking Castle Rock and their crews for both their patronage and friendliness. Seems to me that both the Hollywood folks and my friends, the "locals," have put forth a genuine effort to be good neighbors and friends. That's the real Ferndale spirit, and I'm thrilled to see it alive and well.»
    To quote Oprah...FASCINATING!

Wow!!!! Majestic Majestic PICTURES!!! (and some more)

Oh Boy Oh Boy Oh BOY!!!!! Look! What I see on Jim Carrey online

    Mabel's Diner
    © Ferndale Fritz
    Mabel's Diner
    © Ferndale Fritz

It's a look at Mabel's Diner. And the set seems to be so realistically functional that in the picture at right you can even see some crew members having lunch inside. Click on the thumbnails for larger versions. This all thanks to their reporter Ferndale Fritz (haha that's humor!)
they also say that "The Majestic" is expected to start shooting in Ferndale only next week, March 20. According to the Mendocino Beacon, production will move to Mendocino County between April 30 and May 10. And that they have filmed in L.A.

I....on the other hand, for myself, finally have something cool to report too (about time after the Jim turning out not to be there at that festival, well the festival should have very cool though even without Jim, can you imagine!)(though some stupid gossip papers like enquirer like to report how the ILC crew was pissed off, I don't believe Enquerer, Jim was just too busy to be there, gossip people always like to fake so called arguments) The set at the Chinese men Theatre was very VERY closed in L.A. an Exculsive Was Almost There Report From Juliette here...anyway, here's her column bit:

    OK.*giving the word to Jul*
The Stupid Majestic Movie Experience, very short =o( beuh!! when I got there, I asked if it was ok if I could watch the filming and he said no not unless I'm in the movie, so I went to the casting director like he told me to, and they cast me into the film as an extra, so, since I was late, they told me to wait a little and they would be with me soon, so I waited for 4 hours about and they took me into the theater and called the costume girl, and she said she was sorry but there was no room for me, so I said ok and she gave me my voucher and I left so I came back today to see if they could use me today but they said no because it was a continuation of yesterday, so I said ok, and I told the guy that told me to ask them what they said, and he said well, hang around and you can watch the filming, so I said cool thanks, and I hung around, filming didn't start yet though and then when I was sitting there, the costume girl walked up to me and took my badge for "security reasons" then had some guards come up to me and they said STOP TRYING TO SNEAK IN!!! and I said but I wasn't, that guy over there told me to stay here, and he interrupted and said I SAID STOP TRYING TO SNEAK IN OR WE'LL HAVE TO CALL THE POLICE ON YOU!! so I just ran away and started crying and went home by myself BEUH!!!!!
*back to cableclair again* Don't you hate people like that? It's a big bummer for Jul, I mean, what is cooler than seeing it all behind the scenes? I wish I could...Jul also reports that she found on AOL news:
«Karl Bury has been added to the cast of Castle Rock Entertainment/Warner Bros.' "The Majestic" starring Jim Carrey for filmmaker Frank Darabont. Bury will play Bob Leffert, a World War II veteran and short-order cook whose right hand has been replaced with a hook. He takes solace in trying to protect his hometown from people he mistrusts.»
And uhm...that was it, I guess, for today.

    ....Alas indeedy.

    Zooming into Ferndale...

Here's some more information about Ferdale. (thanks to JimCarreyonline) People like me (coming from the Netherlands, I don't even have a CLUE where it's located) who don't know very much about it,yet are extremely curious, love information like that. Luckely the corrospondent of JCO informed about that. The corrospondent says that "Ferndale California is a little town founded in 1852 in the heart of California's spectacular redwood empire: all around us are vast old growth forests, wilderness mountains, and wild rivers. The Pacific Ocean is about four miles west. Much of the downtown area still has its original 19th century buildings intact: Its a great place to make a movie---in fact several movies have been filmed here including Salem's Lot, A Death in Canaan, Outbreak, and many commercials." Wow. Sure a place to be. Perfect vacationshpot I should say. The corrospondent also says that there was a big party hosted by the film crew and workers from Los Angeles for everybody from Ferndale, it should have been very good with lots of food. The set dressers have arrived this week and started dressing up the shop windows on Main street 1951-period goods for sale: Nilsen's Hardware has a pyramid of old fashioned paint cans. 'Valley Arts' front window has been transformed into a tailoring shop complete with sewing machines, signs, and a green elf display figure; awnings are going up all along Main Street shop windows, striped and aged to look as if they've been in place for a long time. A couple of the set dressers worked on Outbreak there in 1994 and they are back again like old friends. The Victorian style street lamps are now operational, spangling Main Street with big glowing pearly jewelry at night. The California Department of Transportation came by this week and carefully removed the regulation yellow stripes from the middle of the street for several blocks, replacing them with a single white stripe, as it would have been in 1951. Huge cut trees have been moved into place around the 'Town Hall' set, in preparation for turning the area into a park for the movie. And then there was the raising of the sign into place on the front of the theatre set: Ferndale police helped to block off part of Main Street while a big arch went up first, studded with small lamps, followed by the tall sign with the word 'MAJESTIC' spelled out vertically, spearing the sky, flanked by those carved figures. People came from all over to watch the crane lifting this thing into the air, including me, taking a lot of pictures. It was quite an event. The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors figures its a long shot: but they have sent a letter to the production company asking if the premiere of 'The Majestic' can be held in Humboldt County (Ferndale does not have an operational movie theatre of its own, so any premiere would probably be in Eureka, the county seat)---it might be unlikely, they said on the local TV news, but they figured they'd try. There are no famous faces yet, but it won't be long. *sigh*. Too bad Losser isn't such fantastic film spot (though the words peace and silence arise, as well as utterly boring). Anyways, I don't know about you guys, but I can't wait for their next report. It gets us right in the middle of it all. Thanks JCO reporter, whoever you are. As you can see, from now on I won't just quote JimCarreyonline. I'll take the time to inform more. Jay. It's more time, but also, more fun. And less guilt feeling.

    Jim carrey online reports...
"The Majestic" lives up to name

That's it! We're moving to Ferndale! And we bet you'll be too after reading this week's report from our friend on location:

«Will it be a pawn shop? or a dress shop or a Buster Brown shoe store? My friend Ellie Green isn't sure, but Castle Rock is going to use her space for something---earlier in the week they were going to remove all her merchandise and turn her shop into a pawn shop and shoot a scene inside, then today she heard it would be a Buster Brown shoe store. She's still waiting to hear. Her shop (called 'Valley Arts') is in the building right next door to the big Majestic theatre set, right behind the town clock, so it will be in many shots of the theatre: the theatre set has blocked out a lot of sunlight from Ellie's side window. The construction crew has put up wood siding and painting crews are busy making the siding look weathered and peeling even down the narrow passage between the buildings.

The theatre building is solid looking, just like a real building: it has a solid roof, so looking in through the front doors of the theatre you see deep blackness as you would if you looked into a real theatre. Its as tall as the tallest buildings on Main Street, and wider than many of them. With the paint, it will look as if its been there since the 1890's.

Awnings have begun to go up on the grocery store which will be right in the middle of filming: many other businesses will be dressed with new signs and awnings as the week goes on.

Castle Rock has been fascinated with Ring's pharmacy and have taken many photographs---its a great old building with the original turned wood shelving interior intact: for us, its just the local drug store, but it does look like it belongs in a museum. I have heard the Castle Rock wants to digitize the building and move it across the street...

The diner set is now in place, in the parking space of Lino's service station which was still wearing its stage makeup from its turn in Outbreak in 1994. Lino is a real guy in town, and his place was once a real gas station: now its the temporary home to the stainless steel art deco style diner on the corner (the same corner where Dustin Hoffman and Cuba Gooding Jr. swiped that helicopter in Outbreak)

Diagonally across the intersection the three story Town Hall set has enveloped the one story US Bank building: the US Bank was also completely hidden in Outbreak, playing the role of the local hospital with all those stricken patients (many of whom are our friends and neighbors).

The most interesting thing this week: big 'carved wood' figures were hoisted up onto the front of the Victorian-style Majestic theatre set this morning: they're not wood of course, but they are cast and painted to look like it. On the right is a lady in classical robes carrying a comedy mask: on the left a man in a flowing toga with a mask of tragedy. Makes a really majestic picture already, and its not even close to being finished: there is a lot of neon yet to come, being hoisted in place next week.

Local artist Jack Mays is keeping busy making drawings of the set buildings as they go up around town.»
