The Dresses

The dresses are in room all alone..
They have a special low white light on them..
Which is essential for preserving them.
Suzanne King said
That she went to the Smithsonian Institute
And spent at least 6 hours one day,
Learning how to take care of them...
This includes..
White light, and white gloves for handling,
A constant even temperature...
Their own air proof glass case...
When on display...
And a temperature controlled
Fireproof vault
Where they are stored
In total darkness
When they are not on tour...

PERIWINKLE BLUE

RAW SILK EVENING DRESS
By Donald Campbell

The full-skirted off-the-shoulder gown features a ruffled bodice

with bow and is complemented by matching wide belt.
Worn on many occasions, the first being her Royal Tour to New Zealand in 1983.

This dress is just so delicate looking..
So dainty...
The waist line is just so tiny...
A very young Diana wore this dress
And it photographs from blue to purple.
Even though to me..It looks purple
It is called "periwinkle blue."
This dress is in the main showroom
next to the wedding section...
It seems right it should be there..
A part of the time when she was first
A bride, princess, young wife and then mother..
This was a dress Suzanne rescued from a garage!
Yes, that is right..
Our Diana's dress was being stored in a garage...
No special handleing or care...
More than likely in a garment bag.
When Suzanne got it..It was faded slightly...
And all crinkled up the from Federal Express box it arrived in..
She couldn't believe it was sent like that...
That it ws kept like that..
But through loving restoration
It is almost as beautiful
as the day Diana first wore it..

BOIS DE ROSE SILK TAFFETA

EVENING DRESS
PRINTED WITH BLUE CHINTZ FLOWERS
By Catherine Walker

This gown has a tucked and pleated strapless bodice.

The skirt is gathered into an asymmetrical bow at the back with a demi train.
Worn during an official visit to Melbourne, Australia in 1988.

This dress is probably my favorite of the collection

Diana took Australia and the world by storm on this trip to Australia.
Prince Charles, as heir to the throne,
Was used to being the center of attention…
It was Diana’s tour all the way…
There are so many pictures of this dress
And so many times in videos and in programs,
We’ve seen her dancing with Prince Charles
A totally beautiful woman in a stunning dress.

According to Suzanne
Catherine Walker wanted this dress to be like
An English Spring Garden
It photographs blue and white
But actually has a delicate rose pink pattern through out the fabric..
Giving it a rose glow when you look at it in its case…

This dress was bought origonally, from the Christie’s auction
By a newspaper in Australia…
And was won by a lady in a contest they were having.
Suzanne had seen the dress for sale on a private sale site
And wanted the dress for her then private collection.
It took almost a year and a half before the dress
Was finally bought by the Pink Ribbons Crusade.
The woman who had won it
Wanted it to be taken care of due to its priceless memories
As well as presented in something befitting Diana’s dignity
So Susanne flew to Australia and brought the dress back to its new home
Pink Ribbons Crusade

EGGSHELL BLUE CHIFFON

AND LACE EVENING DRESS
By Catherine Walker

The bodice is pointed in pale blue lace, trimmed with ribbon work flowers

and pearlized sequins on pale blue satin. There is draping at the hips
with pale blue silk chiffon and pearlized sequins
falling to a demi train at the back, with two trailing ties.
Worn on an official visit to the Cameroons in 1989.

This dress is special to me..

Almost 3 years ago..I wrote the forward for a petiton..
I found it the other day..

Do We really need another piece of Diana sold?

GADCO is offering to cut up into one inch pieces
And put on a plaque
The dress that they purchased in the Christie’s Auction. ..
For $25.00,each, they are offering a piece of Diana’s dress,
A dress that is a piece of history,
Something that can never be replaced,
Attached to an engraved plaque.
When does it stop?
Why not preserve the dress and offer it for display
In at a traveling memorial to
Diana,Princess of Wales?
Since GADCO is so anxious to make a difference,
They could instead,
Offer all the proceeds from the sale of the doll they just designed
To a worthy charity.
While we recognize the plight of the children
And of course Diana’s connection to them,
Diana is gone.
She will never wear another dress,
Never attend another charity function,
Never dance again...
That dress is a piece of Diana’s history—
A history that we all shared with her.
She has been sold so many times--
Hasn’t there been enough of that?
Maria Lindberg

And that is what happened...

GADCO did say if a foundation or company
would come forward to purchase the dress, it would be saved...
That is what Suzanne and Pink Ribbons Crusade did...
They bought the dress...
Now the dress is safe for always..
Many thousands of people will be able to look at it..
Remember Diana...
And it will raise money for many years to come
For breast cancer awareness
Saving many thousands of lives each year...

CREAM PLEATED SILK

DINNER DRESS
By Catherine Walker

The upper bodice and sleeves are embroidered with shim- mering flowers

whose stamens are formed of glass beads and leaves of simulated pearls.
The cuffs each have three large paste and simulated pearl buttons
and the wide leather belt, covered in white silk crepe,
is trimmed with a large medallion of paste and simulated pearls.
Worn at an official reception in London in 1982,
and later in Nepal in 1993.

This is another dress, saved from dismantlement by

Suzanne King and Pink Ribbons Crusade..
Here is what happened:

2000

The Rockville-based International Gem and Jewelry Show Inc.,
which paid $34,500 for one of Di's evening gowns at the June auction,
Had been planning to strip the dress's fake pearls
and make earrings that would sell for $1,000 a pair.

They proceeded to strip the back part of the dress
Of its pearl beads
And use them for earrings and pins
That they sold to collectors.
(Note: this was their purpose at the time of auction,
And when it was mentioned to Diana,
She said she didn't really care what they did to it...)
But then...
We wouldn't have cared either..
Had she lived to wear more dresses...
The dress was exhibited on tour, minus the stripped pearls...
Thank goodness, the dress was rescued by
Suzanne King and the Pink Ribbons Crusade.

According to Suzanne,
The pearls were taken mostly from under the arms
Catheryn Walker, friend to Diana,
Desiger of this dress, and many of Diana's clothes,
Re-sewed the pearls back on the dress,
Restoring it to its origional beauty.
I now, after hearing this story,
Tend to think of Suzanne
As the Lone Ranger
On her white steed
(Ok..jet plane!)
Comming to the rescue of yet another Diana dress...
Without her determination...
This piece of history
And memory of Diana
Would be gone...
Never to be seen again...
Now it will continue to work in Diana's place...
Helping others
I think she would have liked that...
I know I do...

CLASSIC BLACK AND WHITE

LONG DINNER DRESS
By Catherine Walker

The asymmetrical bodice of this dress is of white ribbon lace.

The neckline, slanted waistline and cuffs are trimmed with simulated pearls.
The slim draped skirt is black silk, slit to the knee at the back.
Worn on an official visit to Pakistan in 1992 and later to the play "Hook."

There is no real story to this dress..
Other than a bit of irony..
Diana was photographed
At the premiere of "Hook" with Dodi Fayed
Then just a social acquaintance...
To think that they would one day,
Die in a tunnel together,
And be a love story...
One that will always be remembered...
And yet, at that moment
Barely know one another...
That is something to think about..
Each person who touches our lives
Is there for a reason
No matter how briefly...
Part of the tapestry of our lives..
Sometimes, in ways we could never imagine...
Sometimes..
in ways we can...

FLAMENCO-INSPIRED BALL DRESS

by Murray Arbeid

Featuring a strapless bodice of black velvet and a full skirt of scarlet taffeta,

our newest dress drops to the floor in a short train.,center> Its skirt is composed of three layers of scarlet taffeta over a petticoat of black.
The Princess wore this dress on an official visit to Spain and to a London film premiere.
Her unusual touch was one black glove and one red glove.

The one red and one black glove

Was such a "fashion statement" the press said.
I saw an interview with Diana's then hairdresser.
He said she came in with the dress on and a pair of gloves in each color.
She said
"So which should it be, red or black?"
He said,"Why not one of each?"
So that's what she did..
This dress was origonally purchased
At the Christie's Auction, by a photographer from London.
He owned a kind of Glamour shots business
And made three exact copies of the dress in different sizes.
It was displayed in his shop window...
You could have your picture taken in Diana's dress.
He recently needed the money
As he had some business problems
And Jess King,
Suzanne's wonderful husband,
Bought it for her for a Christmas/Valentines present..
Her poster in the lobby says
"I Married Royalty!"
And she did..
He is certainly a prince!

My Last Thoughts...

As I leave the exhibit,

And pass back through the tapestry doors...
I think of how like life…
A tapestry is..
God,
Who is after all,
The Master weaver,
Weaves a pattern for our lives..
A story told between birth and death…
People,events, places we travel…
Songs we sing…
Or don’t sing…
Affects whether we have true colors or false..
He gives us the colors of life…
The pattern…
We decide if the colors will be strong and true...
Or weak and pale…
Diana had true colors..
She made each day of her life a vivid color…
Good bad or in between..
Every color was vivid…
And that’s what I want to do..
Make each weaving
Of my Lifes’s Tapestry…
Full of vivid colors....
Diana honored ...
God’s tapestry for her life…
By living it to the fullest...
She lived it in true colors..
I will do no less..

For these past few hours,
Pink Ribbons and Suzanne King,
Re -wove Diana’s Life Tapestry...
And it was a journey to remember.
