A LESSON ON BOUNDARIES
The days are God's,
and His also the nights….
It was He who set all the boundaries of the earth;
He made both summer and winter.
When my children were little,
I had gates inside
and outside my house.
There were gates everywhere!
I climbed over a gate
to get into the living room.
I climbed over a gate
at the top of the stairs.
(Who needs to go to a gym to work out
when you carry a laundry basket
piled high with clothes and towels
up a long flight of stairs,
then balance on one foot
while lifting your other foot
over the gate?)
I had gates to keep my children out.
I had gates to keep them in.
When they was born,
I couldn't leave them alone
with one another for even a second.
The gates helped me get things done
and keep them safe.
But one day a friend asked,
"Why all these gates?"
I explained why it was important
to my children's future.
"But what about that one?"
she asked, pointing to the gate
leading to the living room.
"I have breakable teacups
in my living room,"
I explained,
"and I don't want
to punish my children constantly."
"Well, they'll have to learn eventually
to stay away from breakables."
she continued, "because there won't
be gates everywhere else."
She definitely had a point.
But I just didn't have it
in me to monitor my children,
and my teacups all day long.
Boundaries—kiddy gates in my case—
helped me keep my sanity,
my children and my teacups intact.
That's what boundaries are meant to do!
Saying NO can be healthy.
Taking time for your self
can be restorative.
You are important enough
—you count enough
—to God to merit restorative time,
time alone, a balanced life.
Let me encourage you to say
NO to too many demands and
YES to time with God
and time for you.
You are worth it!
My prayer to God :
Although You give each of us
the same number of hours every day—just 24.
Help me to say YES to the life
You want for me and NO
to the demands that keep me
continually stuck in the tyranny
of the urgent in my life.
