How did Yellowstone got its name?

Yellowstone National Park was named for the Yellowstone River, which has high yellow rock cliffs along the upper reaches of its banks. The Minnetaree Indians referred to the river as "Mi tsi a da zi," which means "Rock Yellow River." But when French fur trappers translated it, it became Yellow Rock or Yellow Stone.
