Encounter With a Tunnel Motor

The following photos were taken in late July on the Broadway Wye at Anaheim. Denver & Rio Grande Western 5401 is an SD40T-2 "tunnel motor," one of the few remaining in full Rio Grande paint. Currently, there are only 25 locomotives remaining in this scheme without UP renumbering patches. This unit had arrived as the sole power for the Anaheim Hauler and left the following evening with the outbound train.

The hallmark of the tunnel motor design is the see-through grille at walkway-level. This allowed the locomotive to draw cool air near the ground when passing through a long tunnel, as the air near the top of the tunnel is often hot and full of exhaust particles.
