WOMEN WHO HONORED GOD IN WORSHIP

HAGAR

Servant of Sarai and mother of Ishmael, Abraham's son. After the Lord granted her a son, she praised God by calling him the God who sees me. (Genesis 16:13)

MIRIAM

Sister of Moses and Aaron. She led the Israelite women in grateful worship to the Lord after he destroyed the Egyptian army. (Exodus 15:20)

RAHAB

Prositute in Jerich who hid the Israelite spies and became an ancestor of Jesus. She recognized the God of Israel as the God of heavens and the earth below. (Joshua 2:8-14)

DEBORAH

Prophet and judge of Israel. God used her to deliver Israel from the Canaanites. She and Barak sang a song of praise to the Lord after their victory. (Judges4-5)

RUTH

A Moabite widow who was faithful to God and to her mother-in-law, Naomi. Her love for God and for Naomi led her to faithfully serve and obey both of them. (Ruth 1:16-17)

HANNAH

She cried out in anquish of childlessness to God, and God answered her cries. She praised God for giving her a son, Samuel, and then gave him back to the Lord for full-time service. (1 Samuel 1-2)

ESTHER

A Jew and queen of Persia. She helped save the Jewish people and Judah by placing her life in danger and intervening for them before the king. (Esther 4)

MARY

Mother of Jesus. She was chosen by God to give birth to Jesus, the Messiah. Mary praised God for remembering his people and for honoring her with this calling. (Luke 1:26-56)

MARY (MARTHA'S SISTER)

Sister of Martha and Lazarus. She anointed Jesus' feet with costly perfume, portraying costly worship. (Matthew 26:6-13; Mark 14:3-9; John 12:1-11)

MARY MAGDALENE

One of Jesus' followers. Freed from demonic possession. She was one of the first to discover Jesus's resurrection. She joyfully bowed and worshiped her risen Lord. (Matthew 28; Mark 15-16; Luke 8; John 19-20)

ANNA

A widow who continually worshiped and prayed at the Temple. When she saw the infant Jesus at the Temple, she praised him and told everyone about Jesus. (Luke 2:36-38)

MARTHA

Sister of Mary and Lazarus. She knew the importance of service and hospitality, but she learned that worship involves setting time aside for fellowship with the Lord. (Luke 10:38-42; John 11:17-45; 12:1-2)

JOANNA

The wife of Herod's servant Chuza. She provided Jesus and his followers with finances. She was also present on Easter morning. (Luke 8:3; 24:1-10)

LYDIA

A dealer of purple cloth and worshiper of God. Lydia invited Paul and Silas to stay at her home after they were released from prison there. (Acts 16:11-15)

PRISCILLA

Wife of Aquila and co-worker of Paul. She and her husband discipled other believer, teaching them about Jesus. (Acts 18)
