When I Look At You by William McDaniels (dedicated to Lauren)
When I Look At You
I see myself
yet you’re not a mirror
I see my dreams
yet I’m not asleep
I see, though when I’m not with you,
I feel blind
Blind like a bat
yet I don’t reside in darkness
You are my light
because your face shames the stars
The stars we love to see
at night, when you’re with me
The way we feel
is almost unreal
We are two
yet we’re one
We’re different
yet also the same
I understand you
You understand me, too.
And this is how I feel
When I look at you.
