What can I say, but wow.
I fell in love with this series ages ago when I had
first seen it over the net as it broadcast in Japan. A few video's,
a fansub, the first
few issues of Animerica Extra, and the domestic release of the first
volume and I
was hooked. This is the most charming story since Tenchi, and
in some ways it
surpasses the much aclaimed Tenchi. With Fushigi Yuugi you easily
fall in love
with the main character, Miaka, whom is another classic dateless wonder
who loves
food more than she should, and yes, she is also smart as a bag of bricks
but those
become her strong points. The story revolves around her as she
becomes the
priestess of Suzaku.
Fushigi Yuugi is a wonderful tale, but that is not
all there is to it, this series has
some of the greatest animation art I have ever seen, even more impressive
since it is
done by an animator that taught herself how to draw. The music
as well sets the
tone, with its beuty and majesty it is a step above the rest.
Pacing from slow to fast
at just the right moments, and the way it flows decimates the music
from the
Tenchi series, which was a sore disapointment. The goofiness
is also well placed,
and gracefully done so as not to seem to much. Overall this is
a series worthy of a
9, for it can seem a tad overdone at times.
