SALTLAKE CITY- Two-time U.S. silver medalist Michael Weiss of Fairfax, Va., took the next step up on the podium to become national champion with a first place performance in the Championship men's free skate at the 1999 State Farm U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Salt Lake City on Saturday afternoon. It was the first national title for Weiss, who finished second to Todd Eldredge the past two years. Trifun Zivanovic of Los Angeles, Calif., jumped past Timothy Goebel of Rolling Meadows, Ill., to secure the silver medal. Goebel settled for the bronze medal. The top three finishers qualified to comprise the 1999 U.S. World Championships Team, set to compete in Helsinki, Finland, March 21-28. Zivanovic, Goebel and fourth-place finisher Matthew Savoie (Peoria, Ill./Illinois Valley FSC) will represent the U.S. at the Four Continents Championships Feb. 21-28 in Halifax, Canada. | Pre-National Press Conference |
