When Michael Weiss steps on the ice at the Gund Arena in Cleveland, Ohio, to defend his U.S. Championships title, it just might be the first time he skates pain-free all season. Weiss has been battling a stress fracture in his upper left ankle since prior to National Car Rental Skate America '99 in October, where he finished fourth.

Following a fifth-place finish at Trophee Lalique in November, Weiss finally took some time off -- about 10 days -- before resuming on-ice workouts. Outfitted in a new boot which eases the pressure on his ankle, he recently began to consistently land his quad toeloop, the jump which brought him the most pain, which he takes as a good sign of progress.

With no competitions slated between now and Nationals and hopeful he'll experience no further setbacks, Weiss expects to be fully recovered and fully focused on defending his title in February.
