WEISS LEADING AFTER THE SHORT PROGRAM AT THE 1999 STATE FARM U.S. FIGURE SKATING CHAMPIONSHIPS SALTLAKE CITY- Two-time U.S. silver medalist Michael Weiss of Fairfax, Va., moved one step closer to becoming a national champion with a first place performance in the Championship men's short program at the 1999 State Farm U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Salt Lake City on Thursday afternoon.

Weiss, skating to a Van Halen medley, is poised to claim his first U.S. title after silver medal finishes the past two years. Timothy Goebel of Rolling Meadows, Ill., stands in second place follwed by Trifun Zivanovic of Los Angeles, Calif. Both Goebel and Zivanovic will be attempting to qualify for his first U.S. World Team.
