The French Immersion Programs at Rogers Heights offer students the opportunity to "immerse" themselves in the spoken language of French, one of the most useful modern world languages with English and Spanish. Students begin with a full-day kindergarten and are taught entirely in French by a bilingual teacher. As students advance from grade to grade, math, language arts, social studies and science are taught in French by teachers who are French native speakers especially trained in the Elementary Immersion techniques. Additionally, in grades 2-6, English Language Arts is incorporated into the curriculum and taught by English Language Arts Specialists. French Immersion students have an opportunity to continue their study of French by participatin in an International studies program in Middle school and an International Baccalaureate Program at the High School. The students will be exposed to several other languages at that time such as Spanish, Japanese, Russian, and Latin. In 1997, a thorough evaluation of the French Immersion Program conducted by The Center For Applied Linguistics concluded that our program is a model of what a successful Immersion Program on the East Coast should be. In 1999, forty-nine students were in the top ten ranks of Le Grand Concours National De Francais, and two students ranked number one in the nation. |
