Bloody monday 1979.

On August 27th 1979 one of the worst act of terroism against the parachute Regiment was perpetrated by the IRA at Warrenpoint.

In a carefully organised ambush the IRA first blew up a parked trailer on a dual carriageway running parallel with Carlingford Lough as an Army convoy passed.  6 british soldiers were killed in the initial blast. But the IRA had anticipated where the soldiers would take cover; There they had concealed another device, half an hour later this was remotely detonated killing 12 more soldiers. Of the 18 soldiers killed 16 were members of the
2nd Battalion the Parachute Regiment.

"We will remember them."
