Tibetan Freedom Concert

On Sunday, June 14, 1998, I, Brandi, went to the Tibetan Freedom Concert. Me, and my friends Diana, Greg, Sarah, and Anna took the metro to RFK Stadium. When we got there, I was surprised because there wasn't very many people to begin with. But soon that changed. Around 12:00 PM Sean Lennon came on stage and announced the Buffalo Daughters. They were pretty good. IT was louder than I expected, though.

Soon, I saw my friend Liz and we went on the field. I didn't have a general admission ticket and neither did Liz. The guard let her go through but not me, so I saw a place where poeple were jumping the fence so I got to the field that way. We gradually made it to the front of the crowd. We were there listening to Sonic Youth and some other band (i don't remember the name). While I was there listening to Sonic Youth, some girl trippin' on acid fell on me, but luckily her friend caught her before we both crashed to the ground.

The band's were kickin' and me and my friends were havin' a great time. Wyclef Jean got everyone taking off their shirts and waving them around. Wallflowers had this drunk lady dancing around in the stands in front of me. Radiohead had everyone crowd-surfing. The blues Traveler's were ok. They aren't really the kind of music that I listen to. Luscious Jackson had people moshing and doing the pongo (jumping up and down). Tribe called Quest was cool. One of them jumped out into the crowd, and everyone was grabbing at him. It thought it was really cool of them when they made a song for freeing Tibet. R.E.M. was good. The singer (i forgot his name) came out in a sweater and a skirt, he looked very wierd. He had the singer from Radiohead come out and sing with him.

Then came the beastie boys. EVERYONE went crazy when they came on. Everyone was jumping up and down and dancing. Me and my friends didn't want to have to wait forever to get onto the metro so we left during the middle of the Beatsie Boys. BIG MISTAKE! On the car ride home, the radio said that the Beastie Boys. played "Sabatoge", all of our's favorite song. Also, we found out that The Red Hot Chilli Peppers played and we all wanted to see them. I guess that is the price we paid, so we wouldn't have to wait to get onto the metro. But overall, it was great. It was a lot better than when I went to the Warped Tour. I think I will join them all and chant "FREE TIBET! FREE TIBET! FREE TIBET!"
