Midnight Insight

My teddy bear said
as I got into bed
that his tummy was hollow
and he had to be fed.

So I threw on some clothes,
stood on full tippy toes
and crept down to the kitchen,
but I suddenly froze.

I saw my dad's back.
He was getting a snack;
Eating handfuls of pretzels
right out of the sack!

Next he ate a pork chop,
took a big swig of pop;
then he gobbled ice cream
with pink sprinkles on top.

How ironic, I thought
that if I would get caught
sneaking food for my teddy,
my dad would be hot!

But if my mom caught him,
she'd yell out at him, "Jim!
Don't eat all of that junk,
you must stay fit and trim!"

When I got back upstairs,
I said, "Hey, teddy bears,
Daddy ate all the good stuff,
but here are some pears."

Then I sat on the bed,
promptly scratching my head.
"I guess parents
can be sneaky also", I said.

Then I laid down to rest,
a new thought to ingest;
My parents are people -
Who'd ever have guessed.
