PATCHES

As a child, Lois Szymanski says, "Misty of Chincoteague was my favorite book. I read it again and again. I loved horses, and when I read about Misty, I became Maureen Beebe

"After reading Marguerite Henry's Chincoteague Pony books, I found few books about Chincoteague ponies to read. I wanted other children who love the story of Misty to have more books about Chincoteague Island to turn to! So I wrote Patches!" she said.

Overnight, Matt's life has been turned upside down. He has lost his father and been sent to live with his aunt and uncle on Chincoteague Island. It is the summer he figures will be the lonliest of his life.

Then, Matt meets new friend, Danny. He's crazy-fun, and just what Matt needs. They go into business together, digging worms to sell at local bait shops.

One day on Assateague Island, Matt he sees the birth of a foal. As he follows the foal throughout the summer he becomes determined to make him his own. But what chance does a boy from the city really have of buying a wild pony foal?
