2001 FISHING NEWS - ARCHIVE

Late October thru early November 2001 --

Fished several times at Fort Smallwood park. Admission was $ 4.50 (per car). Had one good day when I caught 3 bluefish, the largest measuring in @ 17 inches and 3-1/2 pounds. Also caught a 16 inch rock which had to be returned. I was using bloodworms and cut spot for bait. All fish were caught on the spot. The other days I did not catch a thing.

The man fishing about 20 yards from me was using cut bait (alewives) and hooked many small rock (non larger than about 12 inches) and many small bluefish (largest was about 8 or 9 inches).

Monday June 11, 2001 --

Went fishing at the Aqualand Marina which is located at the Maryland side of the Route 301 bridge which crosses the Potomac River.

Had been reading reports about good catches of Croaker being caught in this area.

Fished from the shoreline for about two hours, using bloodworms for bait, but did not catch anything. There were several other fisherman in the area, one caught a small white perch while I was there, another said that he only caught one small perch and one small spot. Did not see anything else caught.

There is a $ 3.00 charge for fishing. The beach area is about 200 to 250 yards long, but only about 10 yards wide, and covered with stones. It is not suitable for sunbathers, and I don't think swimming is allowed (or even a good idea). You can pull your car right up to the beach. There are about four small rock jetties along the beach, that extend perhaps 20 to 30 feet from shore. There were a lot of crabpots about 120 feet or so from the beach, creating problems if you got off a long cast. There appears to be a lot of underwater obstructions along the area of the beach closest to the boat launching ramp (I lost some tackle in this area). It is probably better to avoid this area and fish closer to the bridge.
