This brief assessment of human nature is
devised from a conversation I just had with my friend, Pat.
Alright people, first of all...You must acknowledge the fact that
no matter how good or unselfish any human being acts, every single
one of their functions is motivated by some sort of greed. This
greed, that is often regarded as a negative trait, is actually inherent
and not neccessarily detrimental. Lets go blatant to subtle here: Say
you got this guy who works in an advertising agency, and the ideas that
he shows to his boss are what makes him his money. This guy is not the
most outwardly honest person at all. He will steal any employees idea
if he can get it to the boss first. You may call this "ya snooze you lose"
but it is a perfect personification of greed. Another blatant greed along
with this one is a simple "steal from goodwill" guy. Yeah, what a piece of
work, but keep in mind he's only magnifying what is to be expected.
OK, now ya got your subtle: A person that WORKS for goodwill, lives an outwardly
good and honest life, and treats everyone with respect and dignity...NOW this
person doenst operate on greed...OR DO THEY?!! Yes because it is impossible
to do an action that does not in some way benefit you above others, it is GREED.
This respect and everything is ultimately to make the person feel better about
themselves, and not primarily to "help other people". This type of greed
is in no way negative, but, nevertheless, it depicts the ever present possibility.
Now through deductive reasoning, it can be said that all humans have arrogance.
This is where if you havent already disagreed, then you probably will...
The generally viewed, "negative" attribute of greed is related to arrogance
because as you can't do anything unless it betters your cause, you can not do
anything without thinking (even just in your head) that you are better, or will
have more success than SOMEONE...While some people may call this CONFIDENCE...
It is in fact ARROGANCE...again..this is not the negative side of it, but it is
still a PART OF IT. I believe, and it is conceivable, that everyone has the
same amount of arrogance, it is just how much they show this arrogance that will
gain them a judgement by others. While the basketball star, with the "in your face"
and "holier than thou" attitude will portray a large amount of this arrogance,
the average checker player or even a person in a conversation will display a small,
or even an unnoticeable amount of arrogance. The central core of this assessment is
the human tendency to want to make themselves "feel better". This is seen in most
peoples desire to call well placed arrogance, Confidence. The same is seen for the giving
person that, by definition, shows greed for making themselves feel better...FOR THEMSELVES...
In conclusion, these negative attributes that are metnioned are, as always, controlable.
Not on whether or not you have them or not...but how much you show them off.
