Prophase I
During prophase I, the duplicated chromosomes condense into a threadlike shape and then eventually into a rodlike shape.
The chromosomes pair up with their homologue and then cross over. The process of each chromosome attaching to its homologue to cross over is called synapsis. Don't fall asleep yet, it's almost over.
When the chromosomes cross over, the nonsister chromosomes break and exchange pieces of themselves with each other. The pieces fit exactly into place when they are exchanged.
