The southern Appalachians of Virginia and North Carolina includes about 574 miles of the Blue Ridge Mountains; linking Shenandoah National Park, near the start of the Skyline Drive in Virginia, with Great Smoky Mountain National Park, near the end of the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina. Designed as a "scenic drive", the Parkway (469 miles long) and Skyline Drive (105 miles long), provides both stunning scenery and close-up looks at the natural and cultural history of the mountains. Overlooks, Lodging, craft and gift shops, snack bars, service stations, and rest areas are strategically located on the mountains for your pleasure and convenience. Many other services are located in the towns and cities along the way by taking the appropriate off mountain exits.
The view of the mountains is constantly changing from sunrise to sunset. Clouds, fog, snow, rain, light, shadow, all make them appear differently.
