This annual event takes place over 22 miles of gruelling Welsh terrain in Llanwrtyd Wells, Mid Wales each year in June.
The 1999 race was held on June 12th and was won by the first horse home, Ruama, ridden by local woman Jackie Gilmore who also won the race in 1998.
They finished some 2 minutes ahead of the Crosdale's Crusaders relay team (3 runners) and over 16 minutes clear of the first individual runner, Mark Palmer from Forest Of Dean, also a previous winner.
The bookmaker sponsors were offering £20,000 to the first individual runner to finish ahead of the first horse and rider.
As yet this prize has never been won but William Hill have already said that they will increase it to £21,000 in the year 2000.
WE CAN NOW CONFIRM THAT THE WILLIAM HILL MAN V HORSE MARATHON WILL TAKE PLACE ON SATURDAY JUNE 3 2000. ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED EARLY IN THE NEW YEAR. WATCH THIS SPACE FOR DETAILS.
THE SPONSORS AND ORGANISERS OF THE WILLIAM HILL MAN VS HORSE MARATHON WOULD LIKE TO EXPRESS THEIR SHOCK AND SORROW AT THE NEWS OF THE DEATH OF SCREAMING LORD SUTCH WHO FOR MANY YEARS WAS A GREAT SUPPORTER OF THE EVENT, ATTENDING AND OFFICIALLY STARTING THE RACE, MAKING THE OFFICIAL RACE PRESENTATIONS AND TRADITIONALLY PERFORMING A RACE NIGHT GIG AT THE NEUADD ARMS HOTEL AS HE DID THIS YEAR.
Although it is very early days both sponsors & organisers are keen that next years race should in some way pay tribute to, and commemorate David Sutch who had become a good friend to many of us involved in the race.
