1999 Victorian Championships

Springers Leisure Centre, Keysborough - 27-28 Feb, 1999

Held at Springers, the Victorian Championships were a great indication of what we could expect at the Nationals later in March. The Victorian senior gymnasts (now 7 of them) were joined by three WAIS gymnasts: Allana Slater, Ann-Maree Vallence and Tam Le, and Anne-Marie Williamson (SA).

Despite a low Vault score (8.841), Slater was rock solid in the AA, taking first place (UB: 9.65 BB:9.683 FX:9.466). She showed a new series on BB, ff Onodi, and a Lu Li release on UB. McLaughlin (pictured, right) had the second highest score but was also given 1st place (1st Victorian). She performed well but wasn't at her Commonwealth Games winning best. She had a fall on her dismount from UB (9.066) and competed low level vaults (8.908). In second was Brooke Walker, who had an outstanding night, I am so pleased she has finally got everything together after such a tought battle with injuries. She was the only girl to score over nine on all apparatus. Her best was UB (9.650) where she shows lovely Stalder combinations. Melinda Cleland came 3rd and could have easily have won the event had she not fallen twice from UB. She shows such power and confidence and is certainly one to watch at Nationals.

Rounding out the top 6 were Pauline Czarnecki (9.450 on BB with a ff Onodi); Brooke O'Brien (fall from BB and weak Vault) and Trudy McIntosh. Once again, Trudy showed such great gymnastics (scoring 9.30 on beam, with a fall) but also confirmed that UB is her weakest event (6.333) with 4 major breaks.

In the finals Vault was won by McIntosh (9.462) with Jessica White and Vallance tieing for silver, UB by Walker(9.625) with McLaughlin second and Jessica Zarnay third, and Beam by Cleland (9.800) with Vallance (9.675) and McLaughlin (9.65) taking the minor medals. Finally, Floor again won by Cleland, O'Brien second and McIntosh third.

On the Rhythmic side, Clare Mitchell (pictured, left) won her second consecutive State title, a convincing winner over teammates Liwia Gluchowska and Amy Leonard. Clare showed great improvement since last year and will definitely be pushing for selection in the National Team. She also took out all Appartus Gold Medals.

The Judges' Encouragement Award was won by Jnr International gymnast Jessica Zarnay. The Nationals are only a few weeks away and they will be used as a selection meet for the International Team Championships in America in late March. There are so many conteneders for the title, it will just be who hits on the day.
