A 28 o nomoV gar anqrwpouV kaqisthsin arciereiV econtaV asqeneian
For the Law appoints men as high priests who are weak,

o logoV de thV orkwmosiaV thV meta ton nomon uion eiV ton aiwna teteleiwmenon
but the word of the oath, which came after the Law, appoints a Son, made perfect forever.

B 8:1 kefalaion de epi toiV legomenoiV toiouton ecomen arcierea oV ekaqisen en dexia tou qronou thV megalwsunhV en toiV ouranoiV

Now the main point in what has been said is this: we have such a high priest, who has taken His seat at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens,

C 2 twn agiwn leitourgoV kai thV skhnhV thV alhqinhV 
a minister in the sanctuary and in the true tabernacle, 

hn ephxen o kurioV ouk anqrwpoV  [3 see note at end of table]
which the Lord pitched, not man.

D 4 ei men oun hn epi ghV oud an hn iereuV 
Now if He were on earth, He would not be a priest at all, 

ontwn twn prosferontwn kata nomon ta dwra
since there are those who offer the gifts according to the Law;

E 5 oitineV upodeigmati kai skia latreuousin twn epouraniwn 
who serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things, 
F kaqwV kecrhmatistai mwushV   just as Moses was warned by God 

mellwn epitelein thn skhnhn  
when he was about to erect the tabernacle; 

E* ora gar fhsin poihseiV panta  
for, "See," He says, "that you make all things 

kata ton tupon ton deicqenta soi en tw orei
according to the pattern which was shown you on the mountain."

D* 6 nun[i] de diaforwteraV tetucen leitourgiaV 
But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, 
C* osw kai kreittonoV estin diaqhkhV mesithV 
by as much as He is also the mediator of a better covenant, 
B* htiV epi kreittosin epaggeliaiV nenomoqethtai
which has been enacted on better promises.

Bligh omitted without comment verse 7:

For if that first covenant had been faultless,

there would have been no occasion sought for a second.

For finding fault with them, He says, "Behold, days are coming, says the Lord, 

kai suntelesw epi ton oikon israhl kai epi ton oikon iouda diaqhkhn kainhn
when I will effect a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah;

9 ou kata thn diaqhkhn hn epoihsa toiV patrasin autwn 
not like the covenant which I made with their fathers 

en hmera epilabomenou mou thV ceiroV autwn exagagein autouV ek ghV aiguptou 
on the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; 

oti autoi ouk enemeinan en th diaqhkh mou kagw hmelhsa autwn legei kurioV
for they did not continue in My covenant, and I did not care for them, says the Lord.

10 oti auth h diaqhkh hn diaqhsomai tw oikw israhl meta taV hmeraV ekeinaV 
"For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, 

legei kurioV didouV nomouV mou eiV thn dianoian autwn 
says the Lord: I will put My laws into their minds, 

kai epi kardiaV autwn epigrayw autouV  and I will write them on their hearts. 

kai esomai autoiV eiV qeon kai autoi esontai moi eiV laon
And I will be their God, and they shall be My people.

11 kai ou mh didaxwsin ekastoV ton polithn autou kai ekastoV ton adelfon autou
"And they shall not teach everyone his fellow citizen, and everyone his brother, 

 legwn gnwqi ton kurion oti panteV eidhsousin me apo mikrou ewV megalou autwn
saying, `Know the Lord,’ for all will know Me, from the least to the greatest of them.

12 oti ilewV esomai taiV adikiaiV autwn kai twn amartiwn autwn ou mh mnhsqw eti
"For I will be merciful to their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more."

13 en tw legein kainhn pepalaiwken thn prwthn 
When He said, "A new covenant," He has made the first obsolete. 

to de palaioumenon kai ghraskon egguV afanismou
But whatever is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to disappear.

Bligh comments: "v. 3, omitted above, seems to have no place in this structure: 
paV gar arciereuV eiV to prosferein dwra te kai qusiaV kaqistatai 
"For every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices; 

oqen anagkaion ecein ti kai touton o prosenegkh.
so it is necessary that this high priest also have something to offer."

Bligh also notes: "The balance between A and A* is upset by the very long quotation in A*."
