Fairport Blue took on a tough Webster team in their home opener in the next
game and once again started slowly. The Red Raiders dug a huge hole falling
behind 12-0 but battled furiously before falling short 12-8.
The Blue team got on the board in the fifth inning. Jim Wetzel walked to
lead off the inning. Jason Meyers singled to left with one out but a strong
relay was able to cut down Wetzel with a perfect throw at the plate.
Osadnick reached on an error by the second baseman but an errant throw
allowed Meyers to score the first run.
The Red Raiders bats caught fire in the sixth inning. Chris Vidare singled
to center to get the rally started. Economides lined a single to right and
Chris Miller was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Pierce Ammons delivered
a key line drive hit to right to drive in a pair of runs and put runners on
the corners. Schild drilled his second hit of the game down the third base
line to drive in Miller. Wetzel singled up the middle to load the bases
again. Still with no outs Duffy stepped in and delivered a clutch base hit
to left to drive in two more runs and cut the deficit to 12-6. Osadnick
kept the rally going when he lined a base hit to right to drive in one run
and another run scored when the outfield throw was overthrown. After their
third pitcher Webster finally closed the door and shut down the Fairport
rally.
Duffy came on to pitch 3 1/3 innings of sparkling relief giving up no runs,
just one hit with no walks and two strikeouts.
