The History of Pi Theta Chapter

On March 27, 1982 at the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity House, Delta Lambda Chapter, 3201 Clifton Ave., six young college men crossed the burning sands in Alphadom. These six young men made history as they became the first undergraduate brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraterniy Inc. pursuing studies at Coppin State College.

The six chartering members of the proposed chapter at Coppin were:

Bro. Gregory L. Holmes
Bro. Terry J. Huff
Bro. Carl Jordan
Bro. Robert E. Nichols
Bro. Ronald Wright

The seventh member was the assistant dean of pledgees for this line, Bro. Ruchell S. Reed, transferring from Nu Kappa Chapter, University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

On April 23, 1983, the charting brothers again made history as the first initiates of Pi Theta were initiated into Alpha Phi Alpha. They were: Kevin L Beckett, Kenneth M. Harris and Perry Taylor. In the fall of 1982, Bro. Gary Witherspoon transferred from Dartmouth College to Coppin joining our chapter and bringing the total membership and founders of Pi Theta to eleven dedicated and sincere brothers.

On April 28, 1985, Pi Theta Chapter gained yet another member, Bro. Darryl W. Green. Darryl, the lone pledgee, crossed the burning sands into Alphadom to become the twelth dedicated brother.

This chapter would not be in existence today, had it not been for the aid of graduate brothers at Coppin, namely Dr. Thomas Linton, Pi Theta's first chapter advisor, and the brothers of Delta Lambda Chapter, namely Bro. William Bailey, the Dean of Pledgees of this line so named "Solid Gold" by Bro. Bailey.

The purpose and goals of Pi Theta are unlike any other chapter of Alpha Phi Alph in our region. Coppin State College is an inner city, multi-purpose accredited liberal arts college. It has as its cliental students from the Baltimore, Prince George's County and Washington, DC area. As an historically black college founded in 1900 primarily to produce teachers for the black pupils of Baltimore City, the brothers of Pi Theta Chapter, Coppin State College, have as our mission to raise the expectancy level of the student body through our example, from that of mediocrity to that of academic excellence. Thus preparing the way for others to follow and continuing in the tradition and motto of Alpha: Manly Deeds, Scholarship and Love for All Mankind.
