Kushana's Story

Chapter 7: Battle of Love

"Only in time of great emergency, will we become closer."

Another flashback kicked into my mind...
I went back into the past. Not literally, but I felt like I was right in the action. Or lack of action...The scene around me was lighted by only a little bit of sun. I looked around. It seemed to be dusk, the sun was setting. I knew where I was, standing in front of Nepeth town limits. I looked behind me, the castle was there, blocking most of the sun.
A slight breeze was blowing. I just then noticed I was wearing armor. I quickly looked over it, very common armor. Barely provided protection. There was a sword at my side on the ground. I picked it up. Just a standard shortsword. I almost forgot what it looked like, I had never used one in a long time.
Nothing seemed to be going on. I picked up the sword, and headed towards the castle.
A voice said from behind me, "Knight? Where you going?"
I didn't notice anyone behind me before. I looked back.
And I saw the face of the one who was always in my thoughts. Take a wild guess...Kushana. Must be another one of those memories. She was sitting on the ground, but her head turned around to face me.
I looked her over for awhile, but then she started talking again. "Maybe it's a good idea to go back in. It's been hours, I don't think anyone is coming." Then, she turned back around. "Well...I'll wait here for a bit more. Might as well enjoy this while I can. As soon as I go back, they'll send me out again." I heard a faint sigh after she said that.
There was a question in my mind, what were we doing here? I had no memories of what happened before this. Did we just go out and lay around for hours? Or were sent for another purpose?
I went up to her side and sat beside her. She looked at me and smiled. "Guess you decided to stay?" she said.
"Yeah, why wouldn't I? I won't waste a chance to be next to you." I said. Darn, that was pretty good. Did I really say that?
Kushana giggled. Then she playfully pushed me over. "Your just saying that."
        "You don't believe me?"
"Nah, I'm just joking. Thanks. I feel better." Kushana looked at the sky. "Darn, it's really getting dark. We better head on in." Kushana stood up, and picked up her sword.
As I looked at the sword, I noticed it was a different kind then mine. Very different. Much more sharper than my ordinary sword. She also was wearing a much better protective battle armor. It was made of reinforced steel plating. Compared to mine, she really had the upper hand. How did she get all that good stuff?
Oh yeah, I remembered. She was a higher rank then me. Kushana motioned for me to follow, and she started to go back into the city. I followed, but only for a short while.
I heard loud battle cries come behind me. Kushana quickly noticed and turned to face the source of the cries. I followed suit.
Kushana and I stood at the town gates of Nepeth. We saw a whole squadron of orcs running towards us. Figures, the Scythe got a bunch of orcs, and sent them on a raid. I peered across the valley. The orcs were coming.
Kushana started talking again. "Here we go, this is what we've been waiting for." She started to get a look of battle lust in her eyes. "Our job is to hold the orcs back. We have to wait until the backup arrives."
"Just us two?" I said in disbelief.
        "Just us."
The first line of orcs approached. The held crudely made weapons, and shabby armor. Much worse than mine. Orcish shock troops. They were to keep us occupied while the other lines entered to raze the city. Kushana and I charged at them.
She ran far ahead of me. She engaged a whole group of orcs at one time. Luckily, she was able to outflank many of them, and pick them off one at a time. I took my own group and started fighting. It was a very basic strategy. Let them surround, outflank them, kill one of them. And repeat. With nimble movements, accurate blows, and lucky parries, we killed most of the first line. The rest retreated, into the nearby forests. They would be lost soon enough. However, a few orcs got into the city.
Kushana was busy engaging the second line. She looked over at me. "Knight!" she said. "Get those orcs!" At least, that's what I think she said. I could barely make it out. She was surrounded by orcs, but she seemed to be able to hold her own.
"I got ya!" I shouted back. I rushed for the orcs that entered the city. There was a very slow person of the group. He huffed and puffed, and struggled to keep pace with his allies. I easily caught up with him and tripped him. When he fell, I stuck the sword into his chest. He let out a loud groan and easily died. I pulled my sword out and looked for the other orcs.
They were destroying anything in their path. I found one and ran for it. I heard an audible snap to my left and saw a plank falling. It fell right in front of me, and I jumped over it, without hesistating. The second orc saw me and turned to engage me. He sliced the air, I dodged it and parried it with my sword. While he recovered from the parry, I thrusted with my sword. I only managed to get his leg, he moved enough that I missed his chest. He seemed unfazed by the leg wound, and sliced the air again. I dodged it this time, moving to my extreme right. His side was wide open, and I took advantage. I sliced his midsection, and he fell to the ground.
I looked for the last orc. He was heading right for the open castle gates. I knew I couldn't reach him in time. I took a few steps back, ran forward and threw my sword at him. I prayed it hit. It sliced gracefully through the air, and then it ended up in the orc's backside. He struggled to move for a few seconds, then quickly fell to the ground.
I went up to retrieve my sword, and rejoin Kushana in the battlefield. However, I suddenly heard a scream come from the battlefield. I recognized it immediately, it was Kushana's! I had no time to get my sword back, I picked up the nearby dead orc's and ran back in the fray.
I ran with all my might, there was no stopping me. I reached the city limits and saw it. Kushana in the middle of the battlefield, laying on the ground. There were some orcs around her, but Kushana fought them back, even laying down. I doubled my speed and ran for her. She got rid of most of the orcs, but a few got to her. I scared off the rest and looked at Kushana.
God, it was a mess. She was bloody, but still alive. Barely. I instantly regretted leaving her with a command I wasn't even sure she gave. There were many openings in her armor, and blood slowly moved out of them. She was almost dead. I quickly remembered that I had a healing potion in my pack! Quickly working, I knelt to her side and took out the potion of my pack. She was fading fast, her breathing got slower, her eyes slowly closing. I opened her mouth, and forced the murky blue potion down her throat. Then I hoped it would work.
After awhile, she started coughing. The wounds started to close up, and her eyes slowly opened up again. "Why...." she was trying to talk. "Why....did....you..." she coughed again. "...leave...me....to...die?" She stuttered a bit.
I was shocked. I had to put up some defense, I didn't want to seem heartless. "But...you told me to kill the orcs in the city!"
Kushana shook her head slowly. "I...did....no such...thing..." Kushana coughed louder.
Was she right? Did I leave her for death, just beacuse of some imaginary voice? My heart was aching, I had abandoned the person I had loved. I left her for dead, and barely rescued her. Was I worthy enough?
        "Knight..." Kushana said.
I turned back to look at her, but she wasn't there.
"Knight!" This time the voice was different.
