The boss of Team Rocket is shrouded in mystery. He runs the Viridian gym in his spare time, but the rest of the day is devoted to world domination and the control of all Pokemon. It was Giovanni who sponsored the creation of the super Pokemon Mewtwo, and the later expidition to recover it in "Mewtwo Returns". He trains a wide variety of Pokemon in the anime, including a Kingler. He toys with a varaity of side ventures to support his indevers, one of which was a Pokemon theme park stocked with giant mechanical Pokemon. It was destryed when Jesse, James, and team Twerp were stranded there.
He is remarkably tolerant of Jesse and James's constant failure, even though they obviously annoy him. He is mad at them for not checking in recently, so Butch and Cassidy have said, but he is yet to try to punish them or kick them off the team. It might be because they know to much. Butch and Cassidy are his favorite Team members, at least compared to J&J.
He is not the founder, contrary to popular belief. In fact, the previous boss was his mother, as shown in the CD drama "The Birth of Mewtwo". She is commonly known on the internet as Madame Boss. No one is sure when Team Rocket was founded, or by who.
For years the rumor has been going around that Giovanni is Ash's father. We've seen nothing to prove or to disprove this beyond a doubt, but it could be possible. In the stage show 'Pokemon Live!' it was suggested that Giovanni once went out with Ash's mom "Before he started Team Rocket". The play has no basis on the Japanese show, and has no exclusive information. Sadly, it's all speculation as only the show's creator and writer's know for sure.
Pokemon
Persian is the boss's favorite Pokemon, taking Meowth's place (Like the stereotypical leader of an evil orginization, a spoiled cat is his pet of choice). Giovanni is constantly seen pampering it. Who wouldn't want to be the top cat?
