Meowth is the Pokemon member of Team Rocket. He's one of the only Pokemon with the ability to talk, the others being Ghastly from "The Ghost of Maiden's Peak", and Mewtwo. He taught himself how to talk and walk like a human in order to impress a female Meowth.
He was abandoned as a kitten, and decided to head to Hollywood for a better life. Once there, he joined a pack of street Meowths lead by a Persian. One day, he met a rich and beutiful Meowth named Meowzie. He approached her, but was shot down. The female said that he wasn't rich like her human, he was only a crummy street-Meowth.
He decided that he would become more like a human to impress her. In the attic of a dance studio, he taught himself to walk by mimicing the ballet student's practicing. He learned to talk by watching voice lessons.
Finally, after all that work, he went back to the Meowth. She turned him down again, saying he was a freak. And besides, he still wasn't rich. Meowth decided to join Team Rocket (because Rocket was the first word he learned), and become the most rich and powerful Meowth ever.
In Team Rocket, Meowth was the boss's favorite Pokemon, the "Top Cat". He was soon demoted, and placed with Jesse and James, because of too many failures. He was replaced by a Persian.
Many times in his life, Meowth has been overlooked for his evolved form. A kind trainer who he had helped chose a Persian as the mascot for her medicine shop. Meowzie, when he returned several years later, had joined the street gang Meowth used to be in when her rich trainer went bankrupt and abandoned her. Meowth asked her to come with him, but she stayed with the Persian.
It often seems like the rest of the team isn't fond of Meowth, but they did help him out when he was about to be attacked by his old gang. Also, in the episode "Meowth Rules", Meowth lands on an island and is worshiped like a god. His teammates find him, and ask him to return, but he'd rather stay. At the end, though, he decides to go with them.
It appears Team Rocket is much closer than Ash tachi, as they have had time after time to disband and follow their dreams, but have stayed together.
Meowth is very crafty, using his wits to win battles when he can't win by strength. In the episode "Who gets to keep Togepi", he throws a bucket of water on Onix to weaken it before using his Fury swipes. He trained a very weak and timid Paras into a Parasect for the trainer who healed him when he was sick.
He has a temper almost as bad as Jesse's, often scratching their faces when they agrvate him. Despite this, he has a compasionate side. He raised the egg stolen from Ash untill it hatched into Togepi, never once leaving it and keeping it warm with it's body heat. When Ash wanted it back, he boldly fought against Pokemon much more powerful than he was saying, "I'm just a parent fighting for my child".
Meowth has sworn never to evolve: he wants to show that he can be powerful without evolving. He has a bit of respect for Pikachu because it too has decided not to evolve.
