Megumi is a medicine woman who used to make opium forced by this group by a gang but was later saved by Kenshin, Karou and Sanosuke. She then led a normal life in Tokyo by using her medical skills to help Kenshin and Sanosuke and all the friend who needed her.

Kenshin used to be Hitokiri Battousai, a powerful swordman assasin who killed many to help the formation of teh Meiji Era, but he swored never to kill again later because he was actually a warm hearted person and wanted to see no more bloodshed. Therefore he carried a sakabatou sword[a reverse blade sword] to protect people from then on. Kenshin's most amazing sword skill and lightning speed made him insurnountable. During his stay at Kamiya dojo, Kenshin took care of teh dometic business for Kaoru and his cullinary skill is actually better than Kaoru. One of the interest charcteristics of Kenshin is that he always "oro" whenever he is confused or beaten by Kaoru. 
Kaoru inherited her father's dojo and taught "Kamiya Kasshin Ryu[wooden sword skills] to her students. She was pretty lonely until she met Kenshin, Yahiko and Sanosuke. Kaoru loved Kenshin and hoped that Kenshin can always stay as the kind rurouni as he was. Kaoru can be often violent when she was being teased or when she got jealous. She does not act like a girl at all in the begining and cooks poorly, but later as she liked Kenshin more, she began to dress up more in her kimono and act more sweetly.
Yahiko used to be a pickpocket because he was forced by a group of bandit after his parents died, but he is not bad at heart and is ambitious enough to become a samurai someday. Luckily Kenshin and Kaoru save him and took him to live with them in Kaoru's dojo and got sword training under Kaoru's instructions. Yahiko often teased Kaoru and got beaten[not fatally, luckily]by Kaoru as a result.
Sanosuke is another wandring swordman like Kenshin but he opposed Kenshin's likestyle samurai-the Ishin warriors. When Sanouke was little, his parents died and the Seikihotou group, and he looked up to its leader. Unfortunetly, the group was tricked and killed by the Meiji goverment Ishhin samurais. Sanosuke then sweared to kill any Ishin samurai and challenged Kenshin when he thought he had found his enemy. But the two later became buddies and lived in Kaoru's dojo when Sanosuke learned that Kenshins opposes the government as well. Sanosuke uses the zanbatou[a HUGE sword that was used to kill the enemy who rides on thh horse], but Kenshin cut Sano's weapon into halves during their duel. Well, Sanosuke can fight just as strong and fine with his bare hands.
