Sorceress' Scheme

Part Four

"Hey, I know you," Mike realized. "You're the chick that gave me the stone."

The dark haired woman in front of him smiled. It wasn't a pleasant smile. It was a smile that sent shivers running up and down his spine. "You're very observant," Mari she commented sarcastically.

She was thin and tall, and her willowy figure was framed nicely by the round thick metal bars that stood between her and her prisoner. She wore a red and black velvet dress that came down to her ankles and showed off her body. Obviously aware of her appeal, the dress also was rather low cut.

"Okay so what do you want now?" he asked. Despite the fact that he had been suddenly transported from his quiet songwriting session with Peter in his own living room to this dismal stony place, he wasn't particularly concerned. After all, he hadn't done anything to annoy Mari, or so he thought.

"I want the boy," she informed him in a crisp and clear voice. Her tone made it evident that this was a command, and not to be disobeyed.

Mike then became a little more concerned. "What for?" he asked.

"I'll need him in the future," she answered, declining to give details.

"You know where he is," Mike replied. "Why don't you just - take him?"

Mari rolled her eyes then as if the answer to that question was obvious. "I can't simply - take him," she explained. "His powers are too great for me to persuade him."

Mike was really confused. "Listen lady, I don't know what you're talking about. So you want Thomas on your side but you can't just take him. What particular side are you talking about? And what do you need me for?"

"I'm afraid I need all three of you," she informed him. She waved her left arm and a gold circle appeared to her left. "Observe." In the circle Mike saw an image of Davy in a similar location. The picture was gone almost before it had appeared. Then with her right arm she waved another circle and an image of Peter appeared - also in a stone cell.

Now Mike's concern was rising. He fought to maintain his composure and so responded to her as calmly as possible. "What for?"

"You really are daft, aren't you?" Mari asked. She heaved a sigh and shook her head. "I knew I shouldn't have gotten involved with humans. Don't you know who I am?"

"Yeah, I told you. You're the chick that gave us that rock," Mike responded.

"I'm afraid I'm more than that to you," Mari answered with a sickeningly sweet and fake smile. "I am your biggest enemy."

"It's kind of a long story, Jen," Micky was saying. It was near midnight now, and the two were sitting on the back porch, relaxing. The baby was resting in Jenny's arms, fast asleep. Nicole, Fiona, and all the kids had gone to sleep a few hours ago.

"Well, we've got time," she replied. "And I'm a good listener." Micky stared out at the ocean, thinking to himself. "I think I'm going to put him inside," Jenny told him. "Think about it, okay? I'll be right back."

Micky nodded absently as she went back into the ocean. He was thinking about something Jenny had said. 'We've got time.' she'd said.

Despite his original doubts, the past eight months had told him that those doubts were unsupported paranoia. Jenny was everything he'd thought Maggie had been. Fun loving, great sense of humor. But most importantly, she was real.

Real. Down to earth. Something Maggie had never been. Maggie could act down to earth, sure. But in reality she wasn't. She was up in her world of rich parties and rolls royces. Limos and butlers. Micky had realized a few years back that he could never be comfortable with that.

But I only knew Maggie for three months before we got married, Micky reminded himself. And I've known Jenny for almost a whole year now.

He stared out at the ocean again, thinking.

"Whatcha thinkin' about?" Jenny asked, sitting down beside him.

Micky frowned for a moment. "Past mistakes," he replied after a moment.

Jenny nodded. "I've made a few of those," she said. Micky looked at her in disbelief. "Really. I mean, nothing major. I didn't rob a bank or anything like that. "

"So what sort of mistakes?" Micky turned, fully interested now.

"Oh, like when I was back in school and I cheated on a math test," Jenny began. "Then there was the time I got into a fight and I punched Benny Peterson right in the face and gave him a bloody nose and a black eye."

Micky laughed outright. "You?" he asked. "Punched somebody in the face?" He didn't believe it.

"Sure," she replied. "My dad was into boxing when I was a kid, so I watched a little bit. Gave him a few right hooks and a left jab, and he was off cryin' to his momma." She waved her arms around, demonstrating exactly how she had defended herself. "I ended up getting suspended for four days," she added with a grin.

"Impressive," Micky commented with a smile back. Jenny grinned proudly.

A silence fell on them then, and she looked back towards the ocean. A seagull took off from the beach below them just then, and she watched it soar.

"I was thinking maybe I should tell you a few things about us," Micky interrupted just then, ending the silence.

"What sorta things?"

"Well, like I said before, it's kind of a long story," he began. "Lotsa weird things."

"Okay. Well, I'll listen. I like long stories," Jenny replied.

"Okay. Well, I guess it all started on Mike and Davy's birthday party. See, they have the same birthday so me and Pete decided to throw them a party...."

"My name is Mari and I am one of the most powerful of what you pitiful humans would call sorceresses," Mari explained to Mike.

"Sorceress," Mike repeated.

"You all of course are oblivious to most of our existence, as most of us do not chose to live in this realm. Our realm exists in a dimension very close to this one," she continued. She paused to see that Mike was following. When she saw he was, she continued.

"I suppose you've heard of the prophecy regarding the stone I gave you," she told him.

"Parts of it."

"The prophecy states that two powerful humans who happen to have magic blood in their veins will bring about the saving of the human realm."

"Right."

"At some point in the future two rouge sorcerers attempt to bring the human world beneath them and rule it. Tied strongly to their human roots, the two 'chosen ones', as they are called, somehow manage to save the realm."

"Okay..."

"My intention is to prevent those to chosen ones from ever realizing their destiny," Mari finished and waited for Mike to react.

"Can I ask why?"

"Because they will bring about the destruction of our society!" she roared angrily, as if it was obvious to anyone.
