Richard Wilkins was born about 1805 in SC and died before 1870. He married Matilda (Unknown) about 1833. She was born about 1812 in North Carolina and died sometime after 1870.

They appear in the 1830 Knox County TN census: Richard, head of house; 3 white males 20-30 years old, 2 white females 20-30 years old; 1 white female 60-70 years old. No slaves or free colored persons. Total of 6 persons

1840 Knox Co., TN census: Head of house; 3 white males 0-5; 1 white male 5-10; 1 white female 5-10; 1 white female 15-20; 2 slaves: 1 black female 24-36; 1 black female 24-36. Total 12 persons, 2 employed in agriculture

1850 Knox Co TN, 15th Civil District, Farmer. Age 50; wife Matilda, 36; son Benjamin W., 17; daughter, Martha Jane, 16; son, Matthew, 15; daughter , Mary A., 12; son Abner, 11, son Charles Smith, 10; daughter Sarah, 4; son Richard, 2. Value of real property, $1,000.

1860 Knox Co., TN 19th Civil District, Farmer. Age 55. Wife, Matilda, 48, daughter, Martha Jane, 24; daughter, Mary A., 21; son Charles Smith, 19; daughter Sarah W., 13; son Richard, 9; daughter Eliza, 1. Value of real property, $4,000. Value of personal property, $5,200.

1870 Knox Co., TN 18th Civil District, Matilda, age 50, head of house. LIves with Daughter, Martha Jane, 30, head of house. Daughter Martha Jane, 30; daughter Mary A., 27; daughter Sarah W., 22; daughter Louisa, 19.

Generation Two:

Charles Smith Wilkins (vi.) married Mary Ann Moore, in 1867 in Cherokee County, NC. She was born October 1, 1847 and died June 12, 1890 in Monroe County. Their children were: Julia Wilkins (Married Mr. Pennington), Benjamin Bruce Wilkins, (did not live to adulthood), Mary Florence Wilkins (married Blaine Cline), and Richard Clyde Wilkins.

Charles S. Wilkins (TN Death Index, 191401925, Roane Co., TN State Library and Archives # 256.) served the Confederate States of America, 19th TN Infantry, Private in Co., E. for at least one year. National Archives records show he did not make muster roll in 1863 and was listed as a deserter when roll was taken near Shelbyville, TN on May 20, 1863. He served in Capt. John W. Paxton's company and was enrolled June 4, 1861 at Knoxville by J. W. Gillespie for 12 months. He was on furlough for the roll dated August 15, 1861 at Cumberland Gap, VA. There were only two muster rolls in his file and no other information. These are records 49937156 and 4993778.

Charles and family appear in the 1880 Monroe Co., TN 4th Civil District Census. He is age 39, head of house. Lives with wife Mary Ann (Moore) age 32; son Benjamine (sic) B., 3; daughter, Mary Florence, between 10 and 12 years old.

In 1900 Census, Monroe Co., TN 1st Civil District, Farmer, age 59; head of house, Widowed. Lives with daughter, Mary Florence, 20; son Richard Clyde, 11; housekeeper, Minerva Ramsey, 73; aunt, Nancy Roberts, 75.

From 1824-1945 Monroe County Wills:
Mary Ann Wilkins, Book C., p. 204. To Charles S. Wilkins interest in land on waters of Pond Creek, 1st District, known as Charles Moore lands. To E. Wilkins - personal property inherited from estate of late Charles Moore. Also mineral interests in NC inherited from Charles Moore. Executor Charles Wilkins. Witnesses: T. B. Clark, D. F. Hudgins, Executed June 10, 1890. Probate not noted.
