My Research:
Contact: peggy@eriecoast.com - 25 Sandy Lane, Elyria, Ohio 44035my grandad was one tyrus bell wilkins, born dec. 16, 1884, tyler , texas. he was the s/o trus bell wilkins 1, born 1857, noxubee county, mississippi, and mary s. (wingfield), wilkins, born 1864, mississippi. mary susanna's parents were george w. wingfield, 1827, va., and martha davis, born 1837, alabama.
tyrus wilkins 1 was the son of richard (willis) wilkins, born 1835, in madison county, alabama. his father was , i believe richard wilkins ,born in 1814, georgia. mother of willis, i am not sure of. might be elizabeth....however, i thought rev. richard had at least 3 children by "unknown" wilkins prior to marrying elizabeth (hamrick). richard or willis' wife was susanna (bell), born 1838, new hope, madison county, alabama. she was d/o tyrus hardy bell, born in s.c., and adeline cloud. can anyone tell me who richard wilkins (born in 1814), parents were? where did they come from? anyone out there have any answers?
a few years back, as i was studying this family, i was sent a letter from mississippi archives. it was a marriage petition which i had recently requested. on it was the certification of marriage between my great grandad tyrus bell wilkins, 1, born in noxubee, miss, 1857.., and my great grandma, mary susanna wingfield, born in alabama, 1864. beside their names was the word WHITE. the word "WHITE" was scratched out , and "COL." placed instead. of curiousity, i called jackson , miss. archives. they told me these folks were most likely white-indian mix....as later they would classify as white. i was NOT surprised , as my aunt may bell wilkins, had told me as a boy that my wilkins roots had "indian"....and they looked it. unfortunatly, the thing to do back then was hide this fact.
any of you wilkins out there unable to establish roots? my wilkins did end up in ellis county, texas. surnames involved are WILKINS, DAVIS, CLOUD, WINGFIELD, BELL, HARDIN, and i almost positively believe WILLIS. please let me k! now if there are any clues out there. many of the above names are choctaw/cherokee...perhaps this is a key. thanks timothy t. wilkins
