This is the information I have on my Wilkins line. I was told that Charles Smith Wilkins lied about his age because he did not want his second wife to know how old he was when they married! Can't confirm information but was gathered by three different sets of relatives.

The Wilkins family is of English descent and among the earlier settlers of N.C. Concerning the immediate predecessors of Col. Charles Smith Wilkins, Sr., we find evidence that his father was John Wilkins and that John Wilkins father was Charles Wilkins. The references to the first Charles Wilkins began about 1708 and references to his son John Wilkins began about 1736. The references to these two individuals place them at Chowan County which is located in the far eastern edge of N.C. on Albermarle Sound. Chowan County was established in 1672. References to Colonel Charles S. Wilkins, Sr, place him by 1790 in the far easter N.C. County of Rutherford where he died in 1817. The will of the first Charles Wilkins was filed in 1733 and he left two sons, John and William. John's will was filed in 1774. He left two sons, Charles (whom we believe was Colonel Charles Smith Wilkins), and John, and daughters Katherine, Deborah and Elizabeth, and wife, Judith.

Charles Smith Wilkins ----1817
It appears that Col. Charles S. Wilkins, Sr., left Chowan County, N.C. and moved to Virginia where in 1764, he married his first wife, Mary Thompson, at Norfolk County, Portsmouth, VA He is shown in Mecklenburg County, VA., in 1776. The 1782 census also places him there with six children and nine slaves. The 1790 census (first U.S.) shows him in Rutherford County, N.C. His wife Mary is not named in this census and was apparently deceased by that time. Probably Col. Wilkins stayed in Mecklenburg County, VA until his first wife died and moved to Rutherford County, N.C., between 1782 and 1790, which then included what is now Cleveland County, N.C. where Boiling Springs is located. Her burial place is unknown.

Continental Line 4th VA Regiment (also told he enlisted but never served) Col. Charles S. Wilkins of North Carolina. Married Mary Mercer Thompson on September 15, 1764 in Norfolk, VA Married 2nd wife, Elizabeth after 1776. Children of Charles and Mary as told in will of March 17, 1817. Probated April 1817.
