Gerry Wilkins: "My great grandfather, John McIntire Wilkins, M.D. served in the 125th Illinois Infantry, along with his son, William F. Wilkins, M.D. Both enlisted from Vermillion County (Their home was in Fairmount). Dr. William entered as a private and he was wounded several times. At the battle of Chickamauga he received a wound in the thigh and at Buzzard's Roost, Georgia, in the head. He was taken to the hospital and upon his recovery, was made assistant to the brigade surgeon and continued to act in that capacity until the close of the war. Dr. John was surgeon of his regiment. Both served more than 3 years."
