Samuel Franklin Wilkins was born in Cheshire Co., NH on May 8, 1802. He moved to South Carolina to work on the Broad River Canal. Samuel was married twice. On March 21, 1823 he married Patsy Bell. Some time after Patsy's death, Samuel married Martha Blackwell.

Samuel had 10 children. It's told that the first five were Patsy Wilkins' children. But there is no concrete evidence to prove that story. The Wilkins family moved to Franklin Co., Georgia in the late 1820's. Then in 1840, the family moved to Mississippi in an oxen-drawn wagon. They settled near an Indian Camp near Wallerville in what was then Pontotoc County. Their first house was made from rough-hewn trees and had a dirt floor. Later the family built a two-story brick house, the first brick house in the area. Materials were hauled from Memphis.
