Enlisted; 22 August 1861 ae 18 yrs.-3mos., Mustered 16 September 1861, Private, Company G., 5th Vermont Infantry Volunteers. Was in action at Savage's Station durring the Seven Days' Battle, near Richmond Virginia, 29 June 1862 Was discharged for disability, 1 July 1863 and became a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, 1885 - 1916, G.A.R. General Hancock Post 22 and 396, Sioux City, Woodbury Co., Iowa, of which he also served as Commander.
An Interview with the "Sioux City Journal'', was published 27 August 1901, titled, "The Boys In Blue of '61", in which he gave an account of his experiences durring the Civil War, and with his photograph, but a very poor newspaper lithograph of the time.
He died while visiting his son, Raymond A. Wilkins, in Tampa, Fla., 13 Feb. 1918, was cremated in accordance with his Will and given full military rites by the G.A.R., General Hancock Post 22 of Sioux City, Iowa. His obituary, published in the Sioux City Journal, and in the Tampa Tribune article titled, `Roll Of The Dead', was published 13 Feb. 1918.
