Shaw Junior High School is located at 925 Rhode Island Ave. in Northwest Washington, DC. The school population is approximately 500 students, of which 275 are currently enrolled in the music program. We have a wonderful and very understanding principal, that supports the band in all of its endeavors. The band program consists of five ensembles: Wind Ensemble, Symphonic band, Concert Band, Jazz band, and Marching Band. The school was built in 1977, where the band was started by Lloyd W. Hoover. He began teaching with only 12 instruments. He was the key to the growth of the band. The band is currently under the directon of Wesley S. Hoover. The program has grown since then to include: 20 piccolos, 30 clarinets, 24 alto saxes, 8 tenor saxes, 48 trumpets, 24 french horns, 16 baritones, 30 trombones, 26 sousaphones, 30 percussionists, 24 auxiliary.
