Saturday, August 25, 2001, Aaliyah was among six people killed when a small Cessna plane went down in the Bahamas. The plane was carrying the film crew working on her "Rock The Boat" video. The plane crashed shortly after takeoff at approximately 6:50 pm. Police say at least six people were killed and two others were critically injured. There was conflicting reports about the number of people aboard the plane, as well as, who else was on board the flight. Aaliyah was on her way to South Florida after shooting completed on her "Rock The Boat" video. The two survivors were flown to Florida for treatment. The cause of the crash was unclear. Kathleen Bergen, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration in Atlanta, said the plane crashed at the end of the airport runway at 6:50 p.m. EDT. The are no official statements from The Haughton family or Blackground Records at this time.

I was devastated when I heard of Aaliyah's death today. At first, I couldn't think of anything but her family and friends... and how they were dealing with their loss. Then I thought about her age. She was only 22. So very young. And then I thought about death, period.

Aaliyah was a beautiful young woman. And a genuine artist. I have always loved her music and acting, and I always will. Her sudden death reminded me of all the close friends I have lost over the past 3+ years. So I know exactly what her family and friends are going through. Although I never knew her personally, I am deeply mournful of her passing and I am completely sympathetic for the Haughton family.

For those who are reading this, remember this one thing. Life is incredibly short. Don't ever take a single breath for granted. Make every second that you are alive count. Whatever it is that may have you feeling depressed, or whatever is making you feel like life just isn't worth living anymore... try your very best to let it go. Cherish every single day that you wake up in good health. And live each day as if it were your last. 'Cause tomorrow is not promised to us.

We love you Aaliyah. Rest in peace....
