North Bend State Park is located in the north-central part of the state near
Harrisville. It is west of I79 and south of Rt. 50.
Outdoor activities including hiking, biking, camping, fishing, picnicing, tennis,
swimming in the pool and relaxing. This trip was taken 10/26/01
to 10/29/01. The big hiking/biking attraction is the

Lodge lobby is all fixed up for Fall. Actually it was leaning toward
Christmas already. The place had a nice cozy feeling about it. It made
ya wanna put kick your shoes off and put your feet up in front of the fire.

Cabin #6 is our home for 3 nights. This cabin is quite modern with TV,
microwave and free standing metal fireplace. We had two bedrooms.

Tunnel 13 and bridge 31 in the N. Bend Rail Trail. This is looking east.
We will do 10 miles round trip today. This is at mile post (MP) 28.7 where
a trail from N. Bend SP joins the rail trail. At one time the Harrisville and
Southern interchanged with the B&O here. We discovered
several old railroad structures. MP 30.4
|
Tunnel 10, the Dick Bias Tunnel is cut out of solid rock at
(MP) 30.4.
|
Lookin' out of tunnel 10.
|
Cut Just a railcut.
|
Straw Man This large fellow was resting outside the lodge. He is suppose
to be resting his head in his hand.
|
Bridge Another day, another hike. This time we are headed west towards
Parkersburg. We passed through the town of Cornwallis prior to this spot. Not much
there but some abandon buildings and railroad structures. This bridge crosses the
N. Fork of the Hughes River.
|
Bridge Another bridge. The Hughes wonders all over the place and the railroad
crossed it frequently. It makes for a scenic hike or bike ride.
|
Oil well Yup, that's what it is. And it's still pumping oil. I don't know
how much though. Oil and asphalt are what got the economics rolling in this area
in the 19th century. We also found some old, abandoned equipment at this spot.

Cairo Bridge 36 on the N. Fork of the Hughes and the former Bank of Cairo.
This is an interesting place and building. Check the place out from
the front.
I think it is town offices now.

R.C. Marshalls hardware store. What an interesting place!! Full of all kinds
of stuff. The proprietor has a Masters Degree in Industrial History. He is a
wealth of knowledge about the area and spent a lot of time talking to us.
All the folks we met were very friendly and helpful.
Here's an
interior shot.
What a wonderful place!!
