The North Bend Photo Page

North Bend State Park is located in the north-central part of the state near Harrisville. It is west of I79 and south of Rt. 50. Outdoor activities including hiking, biking, camping, fishing, picnicing, tennis, swimming in the pool and relaxing. This trip was taken 10/26/01 to 10/29/01. The big hiking/biking attraction is the North Bend Rail Trail on the old 72 mile right-of-way of the B&O Railroad. The trail runs from Parkersburg in the west to Clarksburg in the east. Get more info at the official North Bend web site.
Lodge 91k Lodge lobby is all fixed up for Fall. Actually it was leaning toward Christmas already. The place had a nice cozy feeling about it. It made ya wanna put kick your shoes off and put your feet up in front of the fire.
Cabin 91k Cabin #6 is our home for 3 nights. This cabin is quite modern with TV, microwave and free standing metal fireplace. We had two bedrooms.
Tunnel 13 82k Tunnel 13 and bridge 31 in the N. Bend Rail Trail. This is looking east. We will do 10 miles round trip today. This is at mile post (MP) 28.7 where a trail from N. Bend SP joins the rail trail. At one time the Harrisville and Southern interchanged with the B&O here. We discovered several old railroad structures. MP 30.4
Tunnel 10 93k Tunnel 10, the Dick Bias Tunnel is cut out of solid rock at (MP) 30.4.
Tunnel 59k Lookin' out of tunnel 10.
Cut 86k Cut Just a railcut.
Straw Man 77k Straw Man This large fellow was resting outside the lodge. He is suppose to be resting his head in his hand.
Bridge 92k Bridge Another day, another hike. This time we are headed west towards Parkersburg. We passed through the town of Cornwallis prior to this spot. Not much there but some abandon buildings and railroad structures. This bridge crosses the N. Fork of the Hughes River.
Bridge 106k Bridge Another bridge. The Hughes wonders all over the place and the railroad crossed it frequently. It makes for a scenic hike or bike ride.
Oil wll 99k Oil well Yup, that's what it is. And it's still pumping oil. I don't know how much though. Oil and asphalt are what got the economics rolling in this area in the 19th century. We also found some old, abandoned equipment at this spot.
Bank 86k Cairo Bridge 36 on the N. Fork of the Hughes and the former Bank of Cairo. This is an interesting place and building. Check the place out from the front. I think it is town offices now.
RC Marshalls 71k R.C. Marshalls hardware store. What an interesting place!! Full of all kinds of stuff. The proprietor has a Masters Degree in Industrial History. He is a wealth of knowledge about the area and spent a lot of time talking to us. All the folks we met were very friendly and helpful. Here's an interior shot. What a wonderful place!!
Sign 88k Town square of Cairo, WV. It's a must visit place. We walked 5 miles to get here but you can drive if ya want.
