Loyalists attack the Garvaghy Rd. A mob of 250 loyalists forced Catholic families to flee the
lower end of the Garvaghy Rd. Masked men with clubs and iron bars attacked Catholic
homes and vehicles. A woman was injured when struck with a iron bar and a 16 year old lad
badly hurt when hit in the head.
This follows a weekend of Loyalists attacking the homes and vehicles of residents with stones
and 1/2 inch bolts fired from catapults.

A woman taxi driver was assaulted by loyalists shouting comments about Fenians, who
struck her repeatedly through an open window. They then tried to drag her through the
window, kicking the doors of the taxi and rocking the vehicle. She was attacked because she

A Catholic family was put out of their home in the Corcrain Mews. They will not be
returning, one more family gone as the Loyalists try to clear this area of Catholics.
Nationalists gathered on the road in response to the abuse and the attack on the family. They
were charged by the RUC with batons and two people were hit with plastic bullets.
Brendan MacCionnaith and Joe Duffy were both injured.
Also the same night a Catholic taxi driver was attacked by loyalists who dragged him from
his car and beat him.

75 year old Catholic woman suffered heart failure during yet another pro- Orange Order
rally.
The ambulance was unable to get through the loyalists mobs and the RUC at first refused to
allow the private car carrying her to the hospital through. After the intervention of a British
Officer the car was allowed to proceed to Craigavon Hospital where she was hospitalized in
intensive care.

Sinn Fin councilor James McCarry's home was fire bombed.
Mr Mc Carry was attending a council meeting at the time of the attack, which appears to
have been aimed at his wife and children rather than at Mr. Mc Carry himself.
The living room window was smashed with a brick which was followed by the bomb.
Fortunately no one was in the living room, so there were no injuries.
Mr Mc Carry thwarted a previous attack on him last year when he discovered a booby trap
was placed under his car.

Garvaghy Rd councilor Joe Duffy's son was attacked and beaten by a loyalist mob in
Portadown.
The mob had been smashing the windows of Catholic hones in the Obins st area following
yet another sectarian march. Local youths drove the mob out of the area, but Mr Duffy's son

A 26 year old Lurgan man was attacked by loyalists as he left the Silverwood Hotel. The
man was punched in the face and then pursued by the loyalists who had donned balaclavas

The home of a Ligoniel Catholic woman was attacked with a grenade which
exploded on the porch roof, thankfully just missing the bedroom window. The attack was
claimed by the Orange Volunteers, however there are suspicions of RUC involvement as

A green Mondeo car with the registration letters VAZ was seen driving away after the attack
with it's lights turned off.
Later the car arrived at the scene, and the RUC admitted that it belonged to a RUC
supervisor, but claimed that it was not in the area until being called after the attack.

Two boys age 11 and 12 were confronted by a loyalist gunman outside a bookmaker's shop
in North Belfast. The man pointed the gun and pulled the trigger but the gun jammed giving

It was disclosed today that the RUC was in possession of loyalist hit list which contained the
names of 150 people marked for death by loyalist death squads. The list contained personal
details such as names,
addresses, birth dates and car registration numbers. It is believed the details were "leaked by
the RUC or RIR. It is not yet known if Rosemary Nelson's name was on this list. The RUC
has had the list in its possession since February but had not warned the intended victims until
May.

3 people injured in a grenade attack on the Red Devil Pub on the Catholic Falls Road.
A security guard prevented the bomber from getting into the pub which had 250 people
inside. The bomber then threw the bomb outside injuring three bystanders.

Loyalist gunmen attempted to murder a Catholic youth worker. The man was dropping off a
Protestant child in Belfasts Shankhill area a loyalists stronghold.
The youth worker had made a habit of returning the girl home form the cross community
equestrian events he was involved with. Unfortunately he will no longer be able to do so.
Two loyalist gunmen opened fire on him, but while he vehicle was hit and the windows of a
local pub shot out, no one was injured.
The RUC had warned the youth worker that he would be shot if he refused to become an
informer. It appears once again the RUC has been able to make good on its threats to have
victims attacked by loyalist death squads.

Another family has been driven from there Antrim home.
The family is mixed faith the husband Catholic and the wife Protestant. Known loyalists
broke into the home and threatened the woman in front of her terrified children that they
would put her in the hospital by Sunday.
Although the family has been threatened before apparently this last attack frightened them
enough to leave.
They are staying in safety with a Catholic family in West Belfast, but being driven from their
home was particularly painful as they cherished the memories in the home of their daughter
who died of leukemia in '95.
Flags and placards supporting the loyalist death squads line the streets of Antrim which
appears to have an ongoing campaign to cleanse the area of Catholics.

A Jr OO march was allowed on the lower Garvaghy Rd. Mobs of loyalists ermed with
bricks and bottles, tried to use the march as a chance to gain entry to get onto the road.
One woman was injured when she was struck in the face by a brick thrown by one of the
loyalists.
Plastic bullets were then fired on the Nationalist protestors, one boy was hit in the neck.
The march was deliberately confrontational. There can be no cause , other than hopes of
sparking violence for the marchers to have marched out of their way part way up a Catholic
rd and then turn around and go back.

A Family of 4 has been been driven from there Antrim home after a firebomb attack. The
front hall was engulfed in flames from the blast bomb , but the family escaped uninjured
except for smoke inhalation.
A Catholic family in Derry was also the target of a loyalist bomb which resulted in scorch

DUP Assembly member Paul Berry has issued threats regarding Drumcree. Mr Berry is also
a member of the Orange Order.
In a BBC interview Berry said: ". . . They've stopped us going along the Garvaghy Road and
they're
going to try and stop us in Corcrain. But I will say quite clearly
they'll not be stopping us this July.
He added, "because if our security forces and government do not take
the right decision, well then we're going to have to think very
seriously of what way we're going to go down this road in 1999.
"And if that is a matter of taking the law into our own hands, we're going to have to do that."
