The Congress authorized the Soldier's Medal on July 2, 1926. It is awarded to soldiers who distinguished themselves by heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy. The award is generally given for some life saving effort at the risk of one's own life. This is not a requirement, however. The award can be made in peacetime.
