There were a large number of service cap insignia worn by the A.T.S. during the Second World War. The original version of the officer's hat insignia that was used most of the war appeared similar to a U.S. Coast Guard officer's service cap insignia except that the eagle surmounted crossed anchors rather than a single horizontal anchor. Petty officer's wore a range of devices or titles enclosed in a wreath that indicated their specialty. For example, the word "YEOMAN" in a wreath indicated a yeoman and crossed keys in a wreath indicated a storekeeper. William Emerson's book Encyclopedia of United States Army Insignia and Uniforms has a good discussion of all the variations of A.T.S. insignia.
