Naval officers wore navy blue shoulder marks on the white uniform, khaki uniform and overcoat and slate gray shoulder marks on the slate gray uniform, which was introduced in 1943. Line officers wore a star on the edge nearest to the neck and staff officers wore other devices indicating their particular branch. The lace of the shoulder mark is the same as the cuff braid.

In addition to line officers there were various staff corps whose devices could be substituted for the line officer's star.
